I made it out to Roslyn Lake on Saturday afternoon. It was warm and windy as La Louve had pointed out. Thank you La Louve for planting the beautiful rose and flowers, as well as working hard on the garden and picking up trash. It seems like people throw down trash in that turnout ever few days. I do know that the wind was blowing around some trash from other areas when I was out there. I got a plastic bottle in my best shots, that I didn't notice until I got home (my camera has a small LCD screen). I remember picking up that bottle after taking some of my photos, but the best shots happen to have the bottle in the background. People throwing down trash, is a problem all along the roads out there. Broken glass seems to be a problem out there as well. Last week, I was picking up some glass in a dry mud puddle, about 20 feet West of the Power Pole, and I threw it into my trash bag. When I went to transfer the small amount of garbage I found into a bag that was more full, I noticed a tinted piece of glass. It looks like it could be a piece of glass from an auto window. I sent that into the District Attorney right away. They can determine if it was from a bottle or and auto window.

La Louve, all of the flowers and weeding that you did look wonderful. Thank you for adding water to the plants, as well. I added some more water too, because it was so warm. I will probably add some more water in the next few days, just to make sure they have enough with this dry spell. Your rose plant will look beautiful when it blooms! It adds so much to the garden!

I ordered a memorial garden stake for the garden last week. I wasn't suppose to get it until Tuesday, but it came in early on Saturday morning. The garden stake reads "Planted in Loving Memory of Whitney Heichel, 10/16/2012 , Rev 21: 3,4" I added the scripture to the end, because it is a scripture that brings Whitney's mom and family comfort. I believe that no matter what a person's faith is, that most people look forward to a time when there will be no more violence and suffering and the day that we all will see our loved ones again.

It has been so much fun working with La Louve on this project, and being able to share it with everyone! It is great that we have been able to add some beauty and light, into a place where there once was so much darkness.

Here are some photos that I took on Saturday afternoon, after I cemented the garden stake into the garden. I can't wait to watch Whitney's Memorial Garden grow and bloom throughout these next few months!

BEAUTIFUL, SASQUATCH!!!!!!!

Love the scripture passage, btw, and I couldn't agree with you more.

And I hadn't even thought about looking for auto glass or other crime artifacts, so thank you for bringing that up. I did pick up some broken glass too, but it was all clear from bottles.

What a wonderful thing to do Sasquatch you are so kind. The garden is beautiful you and La Louve have done a terrific job. I am sure Whitney's family appreciate all you both have done.

LL and Sas... Thank you both for tending to Whitney's garden. What kind and wonderful people you are. It's gorgeous!

Thank you La Louve! I am glad that you love the garden stake and the scripture passage! I think that it blends in well with the garden. I went out there today and poured 6 gallons of water onto the flowers and roses. I purchased one of the Coleman camping water jugs which holds about 5 gallons, then added another gallon from a pitcher that I had. All of the flowers and roses were looking good. One of my flowers in the back lost its petals, but the plant looks healthy. Everything is ready for the 86 degree weather we might have this week. Rain is in the forecast for Saturday night through Sunday, so the garden will get more water.

I picked up some more garbage, and walked down a little further this time West. I put on some vinyl gloves and put any glass into a baggy, as not to contaminate anything. The placement of the glass is probably a scatter transfer from car tires and boots. It has been over 6 months, so I am sure that the glass has been scattered all over the place since that time. I spent about 45 minutes sifting through the dried mud and leaves. I ended up finding over 60 pieces of auto glass in the turnout rut west of the Power Pole, starting about 36 paces and ending about 20 feet after the first spot. I then found a piece of a giant nut ornament, similar to ornament hanging from Whitney's mirror, shown on the Google Map image of August 2011, parked in front of her apartment. I then found beside the nut shell, a rusty Halloween smiling ghost pin(like Casper),the type worn on a coat, sweater or bag. It fits the right month, but due to Whitney's religion, I doubt she was wearing it.
All that I can say is that another package got sent off to the District Attorney, along with photos of the area that I found all of the stuff.

Thanks again La Louve for all that you have done for Whitney's Garden! The bud on your rose does look pink, and should look very pretty when it blooms!

Thank you GregJRichards! I am glad that we had an opportunity to add some beauty to the place. I have been in touch with Whitney's family and they do appreciate what we have done. I sent another batch of photos to Whitney's family, which shows the new flowers, garden stake and La Louve's new rose! I am sure that they will be very appreciative of everything.

I couldn't say it any better, and want to add my thanks to Gregrichards and Caffeinejean for their kinds words. It really has been a labor of love and when I'm out there I think about all the Websleuths who have shared in these threads. I feel honored to be able to participate in this garden project and to have Sasquatch as my gardening buddy :)

I hope Whitney's garden brings healing.

Photos are from last Saturday morning, prior to Sasquatch installing the lovely garden stake and memorial plaque for Whitney.

I had a chance to go out to Roslyn Lake this morning and water the plants in Whitney's Garden. It was very peaceful out there. I noticed that La Louve's Pink Rose has a bud opening up and the miniature roses that I put at the pole last November, has one surviving stem with three new leaves. My Purple Rose is starting to get a small bud.

As I was watering the flowers, a large truck with a horse trailer stopped and a lady leaned out her window and told me that it was a beautiful garden. I had a nice conversation with her. She told me that she drove by 5 minutes after the incident on October 16th. She was very saddened by the tragedy. A lot of different people were affected by what happened in many different ways. I mentioned to her that a couple of us put this garden together over the past few months. After we talked, there was a moment of silent reflection by both of us, then she looked at the garden again and thanked us for putting it together. She was a very nice lady to talk to. I do believe that this garden is already helping people to start healing. There are a lot of people affected by this tragedy, and I hope that this garden can bring some peace and healing to other people as well.

I finished watering the garden, then went on to pick up more auto glass in the turnout. I found some more Silver Dollar size clustered glass that were still together in a pattern, but not physically attached to each other. It was as if the glass cluster had been sitting under water for the past 6 months untouched. These were located very far West of the turnout, against where the grass starts on the North ridge.

Testing out my new siggy and saying thanks to Sasquatch for the latest garden report. I'll be out there later this morning to give everything a good soaking before the rains return.

Blessings to all this Mother's Day, especially those who have lost mothers and children.

La Louve

ETA: Looks like the rain is coming sooner than expected so I will save my gas for another day.

I keep remembering that Whitney's family nickname was "Mama", and even though she probably did not celebrate this holiday I can't help but be reminded of her especially today and grieve for the loss of her potential motherhood.

So beautiful! Not only the garden itself but also that you guys are doing this! You are beautiful people :)

How do you water it? Is there a tap nearby?

Hi Elainera! Thanks so much for that sweet compliment :blushing:

We have to bring water out there. When I was out last weekend I brought two gallons with me, and Sasquatch brought 5+ gallons with him one day this week. I have a 7 gallon container I will fill and take today, plus a garden sprayer so I can wet down all the mulch. It's been warm this week (80F and higher) and still no rain though we've had clouds the last two days. Once the roses get established we won't have to water as much.

In some of the garden photos you can see there is a drainage pipe that comes out into the ditch on the other side of the utility pole. That drains water from under the roadway. I believe that bodes well for our garden as that drainage will add a source of moisture much like an irrigation ditch.

So nice of you both to do this! You are putting a lot of love and time and energy into her garden. And it shows! Has the family seen it?

Do you think the garden is safe from wild animals or dogs? I know that my dogs would give their favourite chewy to have a dig at it! :D

Sasquatch has been sending the family updates and photos, so yes, they are aware of our memorial garden project for Whitney. And it truly is a labor of love.

I was thinking about animals when I was out there last weekend. Probably deer would be the most likely to cause damage, as they like to nibble on tender green things like flowers and young plants. We might get some dogs interested in digging, or farm cats who like bark mulch for a litter box, but so far nothing has been disturbed.

Funny you mention your dogs being eager to dig. I could not garden at all with my last two dogs, they were such diggers. I used to call them my "landscaping squadron" because anything I would plant they would swoop in behind me and dig up in moments. Fortunately the two I have now aren't outside all day being bored and getting into mischief like that, so I can actually have a garden now. I sometimes can even direct their digging where I need it!

Thank you for your kind words Elainera! I send the family updates a few times a month. It will look really nice when both the pink roses and the purple roses open up at the same time. I am excited to capture a nice photo of all of the colors to send to Whitney's family! We have put a lot of our hearts and time into the garden. Whitney was a very kind and warm person with a very bright smile! I feel very honored to be able to work on this garden with La Louve. It is already bringing healing to people who drive by and look at it. Whitney's family was very thankful for us taking the time to clean up the place and add the garden in honor of Whitney!

As far as the animals go, like La Louve said, they have been keeping away from the garden. The herds of Elk run along the treeline, about 100 feet East of there. There are Alpaca, Miniature Horses and cows in the area, but they are fenced in. When I went out on Tuesday to water the garden and mow the strip of grass, one of the Alpaca's got loose from one of the local farms. Right as I had turned the corner heading to the Roslyn Lake Loop, there was a White Alpaca running in front of my vehicle and a lady in her robe in her front yard wondering what to do. I got out of my vehicle and a gentleman from PGE was behind the Alpaca and we got it to run up the driveway, and I then was able to chain the fence behind it. The lady was very thankful! There is always an adventure when I go out to Roslyn Lake! In a few years, part of the dry lake bed will most likely be an Elephant Sanctuary for the Oregon Zoo. Whitney's Memorial Garden is on the county's property, so I am sure that the garden will stay the same without anybody bothering it.

I took my lawn mower out on Tuesday to clean up some of the tall grass around the garden!

I have not been able to find out anything, about the results of the two hearings that occurred this week. The next hearing is scheduled in Multnomah County on June 20th:

Thursday May 16th, marked 7 months since Whitney was taken from her husband, family and loved ones! We are still thinking about you Whitney! You are truly missed! :candle:

Wonderful! It looks very peaceful. I would like to sit next to it and ... just sit! :) Yes I'm sure it is a place that helps the healing process. Just looking at the photos makes me happy.

Is it the exact spot where she died? (sorry if you mentioned this before, I might have missed it)

Sasquatch, nice job helping with the Alpaca! Sounds like Whitney has good company there, horses, elks ... . And being a huge elephant lover I'm very happy to hear that they are building an elephant sanctuary there. Absolutely wonderful creatures!

As for the canine diggers - I totally hear ya La Louve! We can't garden either. We take care of stray dogs and always have at least some of them in our front garden, just to give them some peaceful time, food, cuddles, or let them recover from illness, surgery etc. And they always dig and break plants. When we moved in here we had a lot of plants, some planted around the edges, some in pots, but not many have survived the constant onslaught, and those who have don't look so happy either. At one point we fostered 10 newly born pups and let them grow up in our front garden until we could home them - by that point almost no plant was left :D Now we have one permanent resident, an elderly male who had an accident last year and had a spinal inury. He walks again but isn't fit anymore for street life. But since his front paws are healthy he has transformed the place into a moon landscape, lots of craters and holes :D Oh well, I don't mind much, but hubby gets angry sometimes.

Sorry for going OT here a little. :blushing:

Did you need a permission from the county to make the garden?
