UPDATE (5:31 p.m.) – The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office released the names of three homicide victims and the person suspected of killing them inside an Orcutt home.

Investigators say the suspect was David Gerald McNabb, 43, of Orcutt. They say the victims include his sister, Nicole McNabb, 34, of Orcutt, his mother Melanie McNabb, 64 of Orcutt, and Carlos Echavarria, 63, of Orcutt.

The Sheriff’s Office says David McNabb previously worked for their agency as a custody deputy from July of 2011 to March of 2012, when he voluntarily resigned.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office releases new details in bloody Orcutt murders

Though the details are still unclear, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office did release some new information this week regarding a bloody triple homicide in Orcutt on Friday night, in which suspect David McNabb allegedly murdered his sister and mother, as well as their roommate, before being shot by deputies.

McNabb, a former custody deputy, was shot and killed after a standoff with deputies Friday evening.

According to a Monday news release, deputies first attempted to subdue McNabb with less-lethal ammunition, but when that was unsuccessful, four deputies fired upon him.

Relative of Orcutt Triple-Homicide Suspect, Victims Arrested for Battery
Authorities still investigating motive for killings by David Gerald McNabb; younger brother Brian McNabb arrested on suspicion of recently assaulting unnamed family member at his Santa Maria home.

The younger brother of the Orcutt triple-homicide suspect has been arrested for allegedly injuring a family member in an assault prior to the killings, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department.

Brian McNabb, 40, of Santa Maria was taken into custody on Sunday on suspicion of battery with serious bodily injury, and remains in custody with bail set at $50,000, according to Kelly Hoover, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department.

His arrest came days after his brother, David Gerald McNabb, 43, allegedly killed, their mother, Melanie McNabb, 64, their sister, Nicole McNabb, 34, and Melanie's friend, Carlos Echavarria, 63.

Good question? I'm trying to figure out what the arrest of the younger brother means? He and another younger sister are the only surviving family members, and the only two who did not live in the house in Orcutt. The assault by the younger brother, in other news stories says it took place before the murders on Friday, 12/28. He was arrested on Sunday, 12/30 after the murders were discovered. Wondering if there was a chance he took part, but left the scene before LE arrived? Beating and stabbing three people in a home, without someone calling for help seems like a stretch for a single person.

Does it say who the assault victim was?

Sadly it happens way too often where a sole prepetrator was able to murder multiple victims all by themselves.

I think if his brother had been involved LE would know it by now. Both brothers seem like violent loose cannons. Imo

My heart and prayers are with all of those who were senselessly murdered.

Imo

A family member posted something something about DM on Melanie's page. He didn't sound like a violent loose cannon, but maybe the family member is being kind. On Facebook this family just looks so darn normal.

Wow. I have no words for this. How awful! So they are saying one brother killed the mom, sister, and mom's friend, while the other brother is in jail for assault charges?

According to the Sheriff’s Office’s latest news release, the woman who alerted police to a possible incident on Friday evening lived at the residence and had returned home to find her friend, Nicole McNabb, 34, covered with blood in the bathtub. David McNabb’s mother, Melanie McNabb, 64, and her friend Carlos Echabarria, 63 — who was also living at the residence — were both found dead in the home after the standoff. Both female McNabbs and Echabarria had been beaten and stabbed, according to the news release.

None of the victims showed signs of being shot, according to Wednesday’s news release. Autopsies for the trio are pending.

Why McNabb may have killed them is still unclear, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

According to the release, McNabb was not legally permitted to own or possess a firearm due to a 2014 domestic violence conviction, but deputies say he was brandishing a rifle when they responded to the home on Friday. They are currently investigating the ownership of the rifle.

During the course of the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office says it also found evidence that David McNabb’s younger brother, 40-year-old Brian McNabb of Santa Maria, had previously assaulted another family member at Brian McNabb’s residence in Santa Maria prior to the triple homicide incident on Friday.

On Sunday, Sheriff’s deputies arrested Brian McNabb at his home. He was booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of battery with serious bodily injury and is being held on $50,000 bail.

That poor witness, she’ll never unsee that. How awful.

That poor lady, finding the three of them murdered like that. It sounds like both sons had violent tendencies. I wonder if they are thinking that Brian might have been involved somehow, directly or indirectly? It seems strange that he was arrested on Sunday for something that occurred at his house on Friday night, to which was the same night as the murders, right?

Going by David's FB page, I'd say he tended to be paranoid and was not too bright. Wild conspiracy theories, fake articles, sexism, anti-government memes, and the usual preoccupation with weapons. Dime a dozen.

Good assessment. If anyone finds social media for his brother BM, please send me a link.

No, I'm just drawing an arrow to the sister named CM based on the information provided.
One of the news stories says another woman lived in the home with the 3 deceased individuals and the murderer; this is the person who called the police. Weirdly, she is described in one report as having “escaped” the house prior to alerting authorities (which suggests she was present at least for some time after the assaults/murders began. In another report, though, she’s said to have just been “returning home” (from some unspecified location) when she discovered the crime scene.
This is speculation only, but I wonder if this woman was in a relationship with either the murderer or his sister (the deceased NM’s Facebook seems to suggest that NM may have had a girlfriend but I could be interpreting her photos/comments inaccurately). If the murderer (or his younger brother) had any issues with LGBTQ people or same-sex relationships (which seems likely based on his social media) OR if this woman was an ex of the murderer, perhaps she might have been one of the intended targets of the assault/murder.
