It's always amazing to me when you can take remains that are so degraded and still extract a workable DNA profile. Separating human DNA from bacteria, from animal dna, even from accidental human contamination from the investigators themselves! The science is incredible.

A missing person may have already been found, but we would never know it.

In many human remains cases, time and geography make identification incredibly difficult. People go missing in one state and are found years later somewhere else. Traditional forensic tools often fail to connect those cases. CODIS mostly misses identities for human remains.

Today, FGG can identify many of these victims and finally give them their names back but these methods still are not widely used in many cases due to funding, awareness, and access.
