As forensic genetic genealogy is more broadly adopted, careful implementation of new tools—like imputation—is essential. Small panels, sparse or low-quality data, complex admixtures, and underrepresented populations can all introduce challenges to imputation, leading to inaccuracies and misdirects in an investigation. Be cautious of bioinformagicians who may wave their computational wands without fully grasping the nuances of forensics.

Honored that Othram could assist the York Regional Police in identifying a 1980 John Doe as 26-year-old William Joseph Pennell of Toronto. The evidence failed previous testing, demonstrating once again that with the right DNA tech, anything is possible.

I've allowed my DNA to be used if needed in future to track a criminal. One of my distant relatives is somewhat concerned about it, but if it catches a rapist or murderer who is a relative, so be it. The sooner the better.

Given that you've had recent identifications from Utah, may I suggest Washington County John Doe (1998)? Feel like that would be a challenge considering his postmortem interval.
