I wonder about the hospital room locking when the alarms went off - is that standard procedure in hospitals?

The gunman, identified by authorities as Diogenes Archangel Ortiz, 49, was also killed, authorities said. UPMC Memorial confirmed his death in a statement on Facebook.

An intensive care unit doctor, nurse and a custodian suffered gunshot wounds and a fourth employee was injured in a fall, Barker said.

When the alarms went off, Small said she believes her hospital room door locked.

The shooting is part of a wave of gun violence in recent years that has swept through U.S. hospitals and medical centers, which have struggled to adapt to the growing threats. Such attacks have helped make health care one of the nation’s most violent fields, with workers suffering more nonfatal injuries from workplace violence than workers in any other profession, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"West York Borough police officer Andrew Duarte was killed in the shooting, the borough confirmed. The other two officers were hospitalized in stable condition.

Law enforcement from multiple agencies, including West York Borough Police, Pennsylvania State Police, and the York County Quick Response Team, responded to the situation. Officers attempted to negotiate with Ortiz, but he emerged from the ICU holding a hospital staff member at gunpoint, her hands bound by zip ties.

"The officers were left with no recourse," Barker said. "They opened fire, killing Ortiz and preventing further loss of life."

Denver Police Lieutenant Alan Ma was Officer Duarte’s supervisor when he worked in Denver, Nexstar’s KDVR reported.

“I have lost a friend and a dear colleague,” Ma said. “Andrew, when he served here, he was very young at the time and an incredibly smart person and so dedicated to serving our community, one of the most successful impaired driving enforcers in the Denver Police Department.”

Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police Department died during a shooting with an armed...

Duarte was a law enforcement veteran who joined the department in 2022 after five years with the Denver Police Department, according to his LinkedIn profile. He described receiving a “hero award” in 2021 from Mothers Against Drunk Driving for his work in impaired driving enforcement for the state of Colorado.

“Officer Duarte’s bravery and commitment to upholding the law are a testament to the selflessness shown daily by those who have dedicated themselves to protecting and serving,” Pennsylvania State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police said in a statement

Officer Andrew Duarte was killed as a host of York County police officers responded to the hospital and confronted and killed the gunman, Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, who entered the hospital around 10:30 a.m. armed with a handgun and zip ties.

York County District Attorney Tim Barker said Archangel-Ortiz went directly to the hospital ICU and held members of the hospital staff hostage.

York County District Attorney Tim Barker said while the investigation is in its early stages, it appears the shooter had previous contact with the hospital’s ICU earlier in the week for “a medical purpose involving another individual” and he intentionally targeted the workers there.

He was unhappy with something that occurred ealier in the week?
