Police responded to Crossroads Accelerated Academy along the 4300 block of Westminster Avenue at 11:40 a.m. after multiple students between the ages of 14 and 16 suddenly became sick.

“According to a preliminary investigation, two students brought in grape juice laced with ‘wonk,’” Philadelphia School District spokesperson Monique Braxton said. “Wonk is an opioid substance.”

At least 12 students drank the substance and began experiencing lightheadedness with some of them also vomiting, officials said. Five of the students were taken to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where they are in stable condition. The other seven students went home with their parents.

"Wonk" is a street term for ketamine, which is a dissociative anesthetic agent, not an opioid.

They definitely need to find out who brought the spiked grape juice to school, and where they got the ketamine in the first place.
Ketamine is used in medicine. Both human and veterinary medicine

It's also used in pediatric dentistry FWIW:

"Ketamine has been used as a safe and effective sedative to treat adults and children exhibiting high levels of anxiety or fear during dental treatment."

Also: (caution there might be a popup ad)
  • For aggressive cats unable to be restrained for injection, ketamine can be sprayed into the mouth or eyes. It is readily absorbed from these surfaces and results in enough sedation to allow handling of the cat. It does not damage the mouth or eyes. Cats eyes remain open when treated with Ketamine therefore need protection with lubricant.
