This video’s a little long but I found it interesting. He’s showing the walk across the border from Laredo, TX into Mexico. He said that the walk from the Greyhound station in Laredo is only about a 5 min walk and then it took another 5 min or so to walk across the border. He said you have to show your documents (passports) and then you purchase a tourist visa for about $25. The tourist visa lasts for 6 months (not that that would really matter to KE). Border crossing is open 24 hours. Looking at the bus schedule from Dallas to Laredo based on the timeline of them leaving & taking a flight to Dallas, it looks like they could still make it on one of the evening busses and arrive in Laredo in the middle of the night/early morning. Bus ride is a little over 8 hours. The comments on the video are also informative.

That is just makes no sense. So anyone can transport a minor across the border? Seems like something needs to change there.

  • #304
That's actually really scary to me to think that someone could just wander over the border with my daughter and only her passport, no need to prove if they are related or not. Ugh.

I am more than a little surprised that he actually got her on an airplane. I wonder if he did have fake ID's? How did he get a 16 year old on a plane without her parents permission?

RSBM

Fake ID's are expensive and they wouldn't meet HSA guidelines for flight travel. Not to mention the passport names wouldn't match. If he is reading the internet about his movements then it's doubtful he'd risk flying anywhere else.

16 year-olds can fly without written parental consent within the US. If he was trying to fly international, he couldn't purchase 1-way tickets without having applied for guest visas in the visiting country which many require official date of departure.

Keep in mind too, now that he has taken her (willingly or not) out of state the Federal authorities will be invested in finding him with much higher penalties attached.

Perhaps there is a charter bus to Mexico?

I agree that a bag of clothes at the bus stop would raise a suspicion. I would guess that she went back to the house after she took off from the bus stop and quickly packed a bag there (or perhaps it was pre-packed and she just had to grab it).

This article says:
“On March 5, Y’s mother reported the teen had run away from home, police said. Investigators believe Y was last seen with Kevin Esterly about 7:09 a.m. that day at North 15th and West Allen streets.

Stacey Esterly told police she said she last saw her husband about 6:05 a.m. March 5, according to court records. She told them he had withdrawn $4,000 from her bank account, police said.”

I just searched and found that the location he was last seen is about 1-1.5 miles from AY’s house. Looks like her school begins at 7:45am. I don’t really know what to do with that information, just wanted to throw it out there, lol.

I looked at Google street view for the address where they were last seen together above and there is a bank branch and drive up ATM window on t he end of a strip mall shown. Maybe that's where the money was withdrawn.

I agree. I think fake IDs are not easy to come by these days, unless you have connections and are expensive. And fake passports seem like they would be very hard to come by these days and I would think there would be a lot of time and risk involved with getting these. I kinda get the idea that this plan was made around Feb 9th when the S*** hit the fan and he got caught getting her out of school/ sending inappropriate texts.

Bus or train transportation would be less risky than trying to take another flight, IMHO.

I would think that the bus lines operating in the area would be alerted to be on the lookout as well as stepped up surveillance now the Homeland Security is involved. And wouldn't the same rules apply to bus passengers as planes?

(and I think that was announced in the media to communicate that message to KE and LE still thinks they are on this side of the border. Otherwise why make a big deal out of it if they are on the other side?)

This is my working theory of what happened.

1. They ditched the car and got a taxi/bus to the airport.
2. He bought last minuite tickets to the flight from PHI to DFW. Probably the last two tickets since they asked other passengers to move around so that they could sit together. The cost of these tickets would be a lot higher than normal.
3. He was noticed by another passenger because he was too "touchy feely" with her. He reports this to the police.

Assumption
4. Upon arriving at DFW he trys to by tickets to get into Mexico. It turns out that He can not afford the tickets.
5. He asks the ticket agent for any alternatives to get to Mexico. The ticket agent tells him to take the DART to Downtown Dallas and walk to the Greyhound Terminal.
6. He buys tickets to Laredo and boards the buss.

FACT
7. ABC 69 reported that they were headed to Mexico but retracted the statement. (Please see the earlier post to this tread.)

8. He has his phone and checks the news. He sees the ABC 69 report that says they are headed to mexico.
9. He realizes that he has been made and the both Jump off the Bus somewhere between Dallas and Laredo.
10. LE was waiting in Laredo for his arrival. LE realizes that they got off earlier and realize that he knew they were on to him.

The thing is, they were on that plane on March 5, the same day that her mom reported her missing. Flight time from Philly to Dallas is 3 hours, 4 minutes - gate-to-gate, it's 3 hours, 35 minutes.

And we don't know exactly when LE got the word that they were spotted, but because the fellow passenger who reported them was on the same flight, it had to be some time after they landed and possibly much later, after he saw news reports. By that time, they were off to who-knows-where?

I'm thinking fake ID, fake passports, new identities, the whole 9 yards. Someone upthread posited that a fake passport would not make it through a security check (paraphrasing) but I simply disagree. I think that everyday, fake identification is used successfully for travel and other things. Yes, granted, there are countless fakes that get tripped up, but to think there have been no successful phony documents used to get in or out of our country, I'd ask you to kindly please reconsider.

Now, whether KE had the wherewithal to get such documents - connections, cost for the documents, etc. - I have no clue nor theory about it. Just saying I am fairly certain it is done everyday.

I am only now getting up to speed on this case. I would agree that their plan is to get into Mexico, and I think that would be fairly easy. As mentioned above, there is no restriction on a minor crossing the border if she has a passport. Modern passports have chips that are scanned, so its very difficult to actually have a workable/scannable fake passport. However, I don't know that it would be scanned when crossing over to Mexico.

I don't know. If they had access to the means to forge a passport real enough to get on an international flight, then I'm worried about what kind of connections Esterly has that he could accomplish that. Trafficking connections maybe? Years ago they only visually inspected your passport when you flew but now they actually scan the passport and take your picture. I think they could have flown under their real names but counted on getting to their destination before they were discovered gone.

I was interested in how difficult/costly it is to get a fake passport and found this:

https://www.quora.com/How-much-does-a-fake-passport-cost-to-buy

BTW- I’ve said it a hundred times before, if I ever disappear under questionable circumstances or if I’m ever accused of something nefarious, my google searches will sure be hard to explain. Thanks, WS! [emoji52]🤦🏻*♀️

and if I wanted to pay a mule to get me and my companion safely into Mexico via the desert, $4K would do it.

There was a huge scandal here at the DMV a few years back that busted a DL license ring. So fake documents are floating around out there, but I think it would have required a tremendous amount of preplanning on his part. Not to mention a lot of money and having connections to a bunch of shady people.....although I think at one point early on someone mentioned about him staying with a meth head.
I guess it's not totally out of the question, but I kind of think they just used their real documents, because why bother to even take them along otherwise? If you have legit fakes, just use those. MOO

How do we know they were on this plane? I apologize for being a late arriver to this thread.
