Cover-up in deadly Lehigh County hit-and-run detailed in court

http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/lehigh-county/index.ssf/2016/11/plea_deal_for_driver_in_deadly.html

In court on Thursday, prosecutors detailed the attempted cover-up of the hit-and-run crash that claimed Alan Ruth in Upper Milford Township.

No one else was charged in the case, and on Thursday, Snyder pleaded guilty to all the charges against him: accidents involving death, tampering with evidence and driving with a suspended license.

Under the deal, Snyder, of Lancaster, faces a minimum sentence of five years in state prison, but his maximum sentence is up to Judge Maria Dantos. Sentencing is set for Jan. 19, and the 38-year-old Snyder remains in Lehigh County Jail.

Snyder got lost and became frustrated with his GPS, Chief Deputy District Attorney Paul Bernardino III said. Snyder went to turn around and head back the way he came, when he struck Ruth on his bike, Bernardino said.

Snyder stopped and got out of the Jeep, while his passenger, Jessica Young, stayed in the vehicle, prosecutors said. Snyder drove off, dragging the bike for a bout 1/10th of mile, Bernardino said.

Ruth, of the 7100 block of Saint Peters Road in Upper Milford Township, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Young did not know what they hit, but told her sister that Snyder had hit something, according to prosecutors. It was Young's sister who called state police, and Snyder was arrested Feb. 25 in Lancaster County, troopers said.

Cyclist killed on South Mountain before he could play song for his dying dad

http://www.mcall.com/news/breaking/mc-upper-milford-fatal-hit-run-sentencing-20170119-story.html

With his father dying of lung cancer last February, Alan L. Ruth grabbed the guitar his dad taught him to play and went to sing his last goodbyes, Ruth's sister said Thursday in Lehigh County Court.

Ruth, 48, of Upper Milford Township, was on his motorized bicycle heading down St. Peters Road in Upper Milford when Frank N. Snyder Jr., a Lancaster County man with a suspended license, crashed into him at the intersection of Macungie Mountain Road, sending Ruth flying over the hood of his vehicle.

Kathie McBride, Ruth's sister, said her family is not ready to forgive Snyder and she's not sure if they ever will.

She described her brother as a loving son, brother, uncle and friend, a wonderful artist, and a talented singer and songwriter. She said he was an original who chose not to get his driver's license because he'd rather be on his bike.

Snyder, 38, of Columbia, was sentenced Thursday to five to 12 years in state prison by Judge Maria L. Dantos. He pleaded guilty in November to hit and run, tampering with evidence and driving with a suspended license.

Dantos handed down the lengthy sentence in part because of Snyder's criminal history. She said he's had 21 prior arrests, 19 leading to convictions. Court records show his license was suspended in 2012 after a series of traffic citations.

"I don't know what you can do," Dantos said. "There comes a point where you lock up a person for as long as you can to keep everyone safe."
