The 9-year-old boy who was found dead in New Kensington, Westmoreland County, on Wednesday morning has been identified and the district attorney said there is a person of interest in the investigation.
Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli identified the boy as Azuree Charles.

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — The 9-year-old boy who was found dead behind his house in New Kensington has been identified, and his father has been arrested on separate charges.

Channel 11 confirmed that Azuree Charles was found dead near a shed on Wednesday.

Police picked the boy’s father, Jean Charles, up on a warrant for a simple assault and child endangerment case from back in November.

"We do have a person of interest," she added. "I can't comment any further at this time as this is an ongoing investigation."
She later continued, "I can confirm that this is a homicide and the child did die at the hands of another person. Based on everything we know at this time in the investigation, we do not believe there is a danger to the community-at-large."
Ziccarelli said she could not speak to how Azuree's mother is coping with the loss, but confirmed that the child has three younger siblings.
No arrests have been made in Azuree's death, however, New Kensington police took his father Jean Charles into custody for an unrelated warrant for a simple assault and child endangerment case after allegedly punching his son in the eye and leaving a bruise in November, per WPXI. It is unclear if the son was Azuree.
Charles has been denied bail, according to WPXI.

The lawyer for a Brackenridge man accused of killing his 9-year-old son told a Westmoreland County judge on Tuesday he needs additional time to prepare for trial. Assistant Public Defender Michael Garofalo said he needs about six months to prepare his defense of Jean J. Charles, 41, who was charged last year with first-degree murder and other offenses.

Charles faces a possible death sentence if convicted

Prosecutors claim Charles was permitted by his former wife, Luella Elien, who is the boy’s mother, to watch Azuree and his three younger sisters in defiance of the court order.

Jean Charles previously pleaded guilty to assaulting the boy in 2019 and was accused of doing so again in November 2021, according to court records.

Elien, 30, of New Kensington, was charged with aggravated assault, child endangerment and hindering prosecution. Police said she failed to prevent her former husband from abusing the child and permitted Charles to stay at her home despite knowing there was an active warrant for his arrest.

Elien’s case is pending. She served two months in jail following her arrest but was freed Nov. 19 after she posted $50,000 bond, according to court records.

Her case was originally assigned to another judge but Bilik-DeFazio said Tuesday she will oversee Elien’s case.
