This happened in a very high traffic area. Multiple lanes up on that overpass. Multiple lanes down below. LE in that area is always working hard to keep this major corridor safe. They deal with disabled vehicles and trucks constantly all over these high speed lanes, often in the pitch dark. Feel very badly for all involved. Worst nightmare, unstable individual with a deadly weapon. So sad.

Representative Maureen Madden (D-115), who will be speaking at the Philadelphia protest on Saturday , said that she, along with fellow legislators like Malcolm Kenyatta (D-181) will be pushing to make changes in how mental health emergencies are handled by the police.

“I really believe we really need to look at how we interact with people who are having a mental health crisis,” Madden said. “I will be introducing a resolution to do a study to address this, and I was extremely disappointed that the district attorney, David Christine, ignored the family’s pleas, our pleas from the legislation.”

She also noted that she has been in talks with the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus, whose members wrote a letter to Christine urging him to turn over the Hall investigation to Josh Shapiro. As it stands, Shapiro’s office cannot investigate the matter unless the district attorney’s office deems it necessary.

Madden said that there is room to improve how police handle these situations, and that in the particular case of Hall, further investigation is a necessity. Whether or not that investigation includes increased transparency from the district attorney’s office and law enforcement, Madden feels that changes can and will be made with the support of legislators and the community.

“It can be done. It absolutely can be done. I think there is evidence, and I don’t think Ben Crump is giving up anytime soon,” Madden said.

I do not know how anyone could handle this any better. I feel so badly for the responding officers. That weapon could have killed any one of them or any soul in stopped traffic there. I am sure that they tried their best to handle it. It may be better to change how the medical and legal fields tie the hands of loved ones trying to help young adults who are considered capable of making their own health decisions when it is so clearly not the case.
