The statement that the woman is a stranger to Nailla seems to me she may not be a stranger to the school or to a family member or friend.

I assume that is what the 'screening' is, whatever that means. They had a clipboard that she signed illegibly. So I guess this is who she was talking to and told she was pregnant.

and they did not check her ID :banghead:
What was her plan if they did?

Very disturbing that this woman knew exactly where to go and knew the child by name!! I wonder if she has a child in the same school??? If not, how did she know where to go?

The school has some serious explaining to do. Yes, the perp will get caught and charged, imo BUT the school should be held responsible. They basically handed this child over to a kidnapper....possible sex offender!!! I'd be livid if I had a child in that school. These things should NOT happen. It's bad enough we deal with school shootings.

Thanks for the recap!!!

Yes, they should definitely be held responsible. I work in an elementary school (home sick with the flu, ugh!) but am very grateful for our procedures with everything going on recently. You need to be buzzed into the first set of doors after identifying yourself over the video intercom, then go through one set of doors where you sign in and show your ID, and if your are picking up your child they bring the child to the front, the parents never even make it through the second set of doors.

I'm trying to think when my kids were that age, who in my life would have known them, that my kids wouldn't know. The only thing I can think of is the people I worked with. I talked about my kids all the time, had pics on my desk, would bring in pics, speak of my children by name, talk about the schools and daycares they went to and name them.

That would get a stranger who knew my child on sight from the pics and knew their name to their school, but not to their specific classroom. Unless she asked where 'the kindergarten' classroom was and school personnel directed her there.

edit - we didn't have facebook or anything back then but I wonder if that's also a possibility

That is the way it should be!! Hope you feel better soon!

I'm shocked they let this woman walk the hallway right to the class!!! Frightening!!

Was this a regular public elementary school? I just wondered if it was a private / exclusive school where they have different protocol for things like this,,,, a more open, inviting environment for gifted/ talented kids maybe? Not that it's right. I just cannot imagine. Getting into a public school is like fort knox around here, so I can't even see how this happened.

It is a public school, part of the Philadelphia SD but it is a K-8th grade school which you don't see very often around here. It's typically K-5, 6-8, 9-12.

Are you saying kids can board flights without ID? OMG! :what:

Until age 18. Always amazed me when my nephew would fly without ID.

What a strange story. Why would someone target this child, only to let the child go a short time later?

BBM....

With the only images shown so far, how can anyone be sure it is in fact a woman? Say as opposed to man in womens garb?

New info:

Woman did not show ID, was first 'screened' by a person in hallway, asked to go to office but went straight to classroom
Tips through night... all unproductive
Good samaritan found her under slide at 4:40, in T-shirt, T-shirt was wet
Went to CHOP for evaluation, no overt signs of injury
Still being screened... screening for sexual assault due to appearance in only a t-shirt
Investigation ongoing, no other info can be released
Child will be interviewed later
They believe woman who went to school was stranger
To his knowledge, no vehicle used
No parent gave permission to release child from school
Asked community to report any sightings or video surveillance
Cant comment on situation from within the school
Woman was probably familiar as she knew exactly where to go what to do, asked for child by name and went straight to classroom... indicates child was targeted
Cant share info on how she got away... child will be interviewed later
Asked by press if multiple people could be involved... stated "its a possibility"
No contact from offender, no ransom request
Reward to pedestrian will be reviewed
Pedestrian comforted child, called for held
She told pedestrian she had been stolen

Thanks for transcribing this. It is a big help.
I am so glad she was able to escape and that she was found by a kind stranger. Prayers were answered this morning for sure.

One thing that crossed my mind. I had never thought about it before.
Our schools have open house on a PTA night where parents can come in, meet the teachers and tour their child's room. It's a mad house going to each child's classroom when there is more than one child at the same school. Student names are listed on the door of each room and there is usually some sort of art work by students taped on the hallway walls. Anyone can come to the open house and walk up and down each hall usually labeled by grades looking at the names of students for each classroom.
So a stranger could be able to find a child and classroom easily ahead of time. Premeditated abduction?

I wonder how they lucked up on a sub being in the classroom? I wish we knew the reason the sub was there. Could the position be unfilled, child birth, major illness or accident of teacher or the family?

Presumably the person must have talked; maybe it was clearly a woman's voice?

I wonder what would have happened if it really were the girls' mother who really did come to take her to breakfast and the school subjected her to extra scrutiny, demanded ID and refused to release the child because the mother's identity was shrouded? We'd probably be reading about a million dollar lawsuit for profiling and religious discrimination. The online buzz would probably be, "A little girl would know her own mother! Just because she's in Muslim garb, this school targeted her and she couldn't take own child!!! How outrageous!"

"The girl was near a jungle gym playset and wearing only a black tank-top. Chitwood said he did not know how long Nailla had been outside. It was about 37 degrees and damp from heavy rain overnight at the time Nailla was found.

The man, whom police are calling a Good Samaritan, called the girl over. She told him she was cold and had to go to the bathroom.

Police sources said that after Nailla was abducted from the school, the woman took her to a residence where a man was also present.

Nailla's clothes were removed. She was blindfolded and hidden under a bed.

It's unclear how the girl managed to get free. Earlier accounts suggest she fled.

But police sources said it appears her abductors might have dropped her off at the playground. She was then told to call someone for help."

Not sure how a unnamed 'police source' would know this if they havent questioned her at all yet, so not sure if you can take any of it as truth but this article is out there now.

Good point about open house tours!

Nothing should have happened because school has a procedure under which they are supposed to demand ID. Boggles the mind that they would give a small child to a stranger.

That's why they have school policies and procedures in place! There was no reason the perp should have walked the hallway. Parents should wait at the administrative office until the child arrives. Whether the parent is white, black, blue, green. Rules are rules.
