Philadelphia police ID Dunkin' store manager killed during robbery; suspect sought

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are searching for the suspect who gunned down a Dunkin' store manager in North Philadelphia.

The incident happened Saturday around 5:30 a.m. on the 500 block of W. Lehigh Avenue.

Police say the store manager, Christine Lugo, 41, was opening the shop when she was approached by an armed man and forced into the business.

Once inside, the suspect demanded she hand over money from the store office. After taking the money, the suspect shot Lugo in the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect police are looking for is a Black man, believed to be in his late 30s to early 40s, with a mustache and goatee and a medium-to-stocky build.

He was seen wearing a blue zip-up hooded sweatshirt, gray cargo sweatpants, light gray New Balance sneakers, an analog watch on his right wrist, blue gloves, and a blue COVID mask.

Doughnut shop manager killed during a robbery was not supposed to be working alone, colleague says

Doughnut shop manager killed during a robbery was not supposed to be working alone, colleague says

A worker scheduled to work the overnight had called out, which meant Lugo had to open the store alone, an assistant manager said.

Lugo, 41, a manager at a Dunkin’ doughnut shop at Fairhill Street and Lehigh Avenue in North Philadelphia, was unlocking the store’s front door just before 5:30 Saturday morning when a man with a revolver grabbed her and forced his way inside, then shot her in the head after she turned over an undisclosed amount of cash.

The store is usually open 24 hours, offering only drive-through service overnight. But the person who was supposed to work Friday night into Saturday morning called out, assistant manager Terrell Johnson said, which meant Lugo showed up to an empty store, left to open it alone.

It was a killing that shocked customers, neighbors, and other fast-food workers around the city, many of whom came in the intense heat Sunday to visit a makeshift memorial to Lugo that grew outside the Dunkin’ where she died.

Family wants justice after Dunkin' manager killed during robbery in Philadelphia

Family wants justice after Dunkin' manager killed during robbery in Philadelphia

As police look for her killer, the community is begging people to come forward, too. Her kids say she loved her job and they want justice for their mom.

"She'd be like, 'It's not that bad, I have my coworkers. I have my job.' And at that same job, my mom was taken from us," said Rodriguez.

Dunkin' is planning on offering a $40,000 reward for information on the shooting that can be sent to Philadelphia police.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS.

I know these cases often don't get the same attention as the wealthy suburban murders, but it breaks my heart that someone just going to work, making an honest living, in the early hours of the am, who probably worked in person throughout the pandemic, dealing with the public and all that goes with it, lost her life in such a senseless way. I hope they catch the guy. He got the money. I just don't understand.

Is it a coincidence that a coworker called out sick same day?

That was my first thought! Wondering if the coworker who called off is acquainted with the criminal who murdered the manager.

He didn’t even cover his face. He planned on killing her before the robbery.
Good chance he’s been in that store before.

'Serial Killer' Keith Gibson, Suspect In Murder Of Philadelphia Dunkin' Manager Christine Lugo, Taken Into Custody, Police Sources Say

Officials say after the Dunkin’ shooting, he shot and critically wounded a 19-year-old in Wilmington and pistol-whipped a female worker at a Rite Aid in New Castle.

On Feb. 8, police say he killed his own mother at a location on Ridge Avenue and onMay 15 officials say he killed a worker at a T-Mobile store in Elsmere, Delaware.

In 2008, he was convicted and served time for committing a homicide and commercial robbery in Delaware.

Officials tracked Gibson to a location in Delaware and took him into custody. Charges have yet to be determined.

A revolver that is preliminarily believed to be connected to many of the shootings was recovered.

So they let him out of prison so he could kill his own mother and two other people, and wound two others.

Keeping him locked up would have saved three lives. I don’t subscribe to the belief that murders should be released after “paying their debt to society.”
