SOLVED PA - Danelo Souza Cavalcante, 34, escapes prison, Chester Co., 31 Aug 2023 *armed with rifle, extremely dangerous* *Captured* #2

This was the best news to wake up to! I’m not surprised at all that a dog was what finally got him, especially with the area and terrain they were dealing with. Now to get him in maximum security so he doesn’t have a chance to do this again!

Kudos to the K9 trainers and handlers!

I am puzzled by where the blood on his face shown in this image came from, unless the K9 who initially got him bit him on the head, or law enforcement were none too gentle taking him into custody. Or maybe this is, as someone else suggested, photoshopped?

They said in the presser that he resisted.

Per presser, he was taken by surprise. I'm impressed.

I don't mind the self-congratulations at all. Keeping up morale and camaraderie is essential. LE works under such pressure and opposition from criminals and public alike, and congratulations is a way to keep the momentum going. I don't begrudge any of it after a mission is accomplished.

I agree. I don’t begrudge them at all.

LE was searching for a very crafty subject in extreme conditions. Searching for a needle in a haystack, but the needle is moving and the haystack is shifting throughout from place to place.

It may have taken two weeks, but it ended with no deaths or injuries, even to the subject, and that’s the best outcome.

Good job also by the locals who reported the sightings and the break-ins.

And good doggie!

So if they found him via heat signature, obviously last night wasn’t the first night they employed that technology. Was it a matter of last night finally being cool enough for it to be effective? I didn’t get to listen to the presser (sad face).

I agree with others here that all of the footage of the manhunt, along with the comments from locals, has played like an enticing travel brochure for this gorgeous area. I never had any idea about Pennsylvania’s ravishing beauty, but it’s now on my bucket list of places to visit.
Hopefully the prison system will get a good working over before I get there.

I’m glad this is over now, and the next time I hear news about Cavalcante will be too soon.

K9 subdued escapee

Cavalcante resisted law enforcement and tried to escape by crawling, while armed with a rifle, under a large amount of under brush. Eventually, members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection released a police dog that finally subdued Cavalcante. He suffered a bite wound in the capture, Bivens said.

“Cavalcante did not know he was being surrounded,” Biven said

AFAIK, his backpack and the duffle/tote he was at one time carrying (as captured on camera) have not been recovered. I assume LE will now conduct a search of the areas where it is known he had been moving/hiding as those could contain evidence how he survived and if he had any help.

I wonder if he stopped carrying it and had a stash place for it. But why?

My WS mind wonders if he left it for someone to fill with food, supplies?

I hope not, but I still wonder.

In the PC they said it was a scalp wound, which are notorious for heavy bleeding.

“Overview. Minor cuts on the head often bleed heavily because the face and scalp have many blood vessels close to the surface of the skin. Although this amount of bleeding may be alarming, many times the injury is not severe and the bleeding will stop with treatment you can do at home.”

The dog is the hero of this story in my book!

Maybe he left it somewhere on purpose and fled that area, to throw LE/dogs off his trail if they found it? MOO

There are times it is delightful to be wrong. This is one of those times. :) (I'd figured he'd headed to Mexico and was in the wind. I'm so grateful that wasn't the case!)

While it took awhile for capture, it provided great training for everyone involved to be prepared for large scale operations.
That is invaluable.

I would add to that, the K-9 trainers and handlers.

It would be great if LE had magical powers, but they are just people underneath it all. They may have superior weaponry, drones, heat sensors and so on; but the weather, the terrain and the astonishing escape ability of DC made this a strenuous task.

Cavalcante could’ve ended up in a hail of bullets, like the last scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and IMO that would’ve been justified.

All he received was a minor bite wound from a dog. I’d say this was a heroic outcome even if it took some time.

Oh yes. The area looks so beautiful.

I recalled that during my college years, my parents briefly lived in Allentown, PA because of his job. That's only about 40 miles away. I visited once and my mother hated living there because everything was all colonial architecture ( ie: not California Mediterranean style, ha ha). We went for lunch to several famous old inns around the area and I could not get over how historical and beautiful it was. The footage has renewed my admiration for the classic American pastoral appearance of the region.
