The New York Times had an article today with a BANANAS story of a homeowner who lives 1.5 miles from the prison. He heard someone creeping around the downstairs kitchen in his house in the wee hours, saw a patio door ajar, and stood at the top of the stairs and flicked the lights on and off to let the intruder know HE knew of the intruder’s presence.

Then the intruder flicked the lights back at the homeowner!!!

The intruder left before LE arrived, only having taken some fruit and snap peas off the counter.

As a subscriber, I am “gifting” the article to you all here: With an Escaped Killer Loose, an Unsettling Encounter in a Darkened House
So my question when I read this yesterday is - why did the home owner flick the lights?
Why not just say “who’s there” or something?
Why signal with lights to the intruder??

Yeah I wondered the same. Didn't want to wake anyone up and make them a target maybe?

It is to let the inteuder know you are there and scare them off. I have done that with my exterior lights.

Yes we understand that but the original question was why do that instead of talking/calling out to them.

I am not a security expert so maybe others have better thoughts.

But some might contend best not to alarm the intruder or others (for fear they awaken or possibly become a target), or to identify with your presence or location.

And perhaps just let the intruder believe security system or recording might be engaged?

Maybe the only thing to let them hear would be a double barrel getting engaged?
MOO

Agreed.
I would hope they were ready to use lethal force if necessary.

If he so much as enters inside your home -- where you and your spouse/partner and kids are, you'd better be armed and ready.
This man is dangerous !

And I am not concerned if he grew up poor or whatever.
The minute a person violently kills someone else -- my compassion for them is nil, zip, nada, zilch.
Many people have grown up with not enough to eat or neglected, and yet they chose to live with compassion and respect for others.

This DC is a monster.
The murder of the ex-girlfriend may not be his first !
Who knows how many he has killed ?

From the link below :
Débora Brandao (pictured) was stabbed dead in April 2021 by Danelo Cavalcante, who feared that she would turn him over to police because she knew he had murdered a person in Brazil.
Purple emphasis mine.

If he breaks into your house, as he may have already done with the people in the area where he is on the lam .... be ready to use whatever force necessary !
Don't allow him to hurt or even kill you and yours.

The sister of Danelo Cavalcante's ex-girlfriend, who he killed by stabbing 38 times, says she has not slept since the killer's jailbreak last week.

Cavalcante killed Deborah Brandão, 33, in April 2021 by stabbing her repeatedly in front of her then seven- and four-year-old children after she had filed a protection from abuse order against him the previous year.
Red emphasis mine.
How utterly revolting that he committed this monstrous act in front of her children.
They will live with this trauma forever, sadly.
I hope they can get some help.

If DC can do this to a person he once had a relationship with , imagine what he could do to someone he doesn't know but whom he may consider a threat ?
What if he breaks into a home and the homeowner sees his face ?

I saw a stabbing on camera in a prison documentary on TV, years ago; and I had to change the channel.
It was one prisoner taking revenge on another for ratting him out, I think ?
The security cams caught it and it was grainy and out of focus.

But still.
Omo.

Oh boy. Longwood Gardens reopened today, with a note on their site stating it is because the search has moved further east toward Creek Road. But I'm currently seeing 2 helicopter searches right next to Longwood...

Cavalcante received a life sentence last month for killing his ex-girlfriend in front of her children in 2021. He escaped while awaiting transfer to state prison. Prosecutors say he killed her to stop her from telling police that he’s wanted in a 2017 killing back in Brazil.

He had been captured in Virginia after her killing and authorities believe he was trying to return to Brazil.

One suburban Philadelphia school district which had shuttered this week said it planned to open five schools Thursday that are located outside the search perimeter. Another neighboring district said it reopened three schools late Wednesday and they would be open for classes on Thursday.

Longwood Gardens, one of the nation’s premier botanical gardens, planned to reopen Thursday morning. A trail surveillance video captured Cavalcante walking through the garden’s grounds on Monday night.

The escape and search have attracted international attention and became big news in Cavalcante’s native Brazil. The main newspaper in Rio de Janeiro ran a lengthy story Wednesday with the headline “Dangerous hide-and-seek.”

Reward increased to $20K, cops are also doing rollby inspections of the freight train:
Centerbeam freight car shown is carrying building materials, most likely either drywall or plywood.

Other takeaways from NBC10 link above:

Howard Holland, the warden of the facility, shared the video of Cavalcante's escape during a Wednesday afternoon news conference and revealed a timeline of the events of that day.

[...]

Holland said that Cavalcante's escape was similar to that of another prisoner who escaped the facility in May.

The difference, Holland said, is that the inmate in May was caught "in five minutes," while Cavalcante's escape went unreported for some time.

"In the escape of Cavalcante, the tower officer did not observe or report the escape," he said.

In fact, he said, the prison wasn't locked down until about an hour after Cavalcante had fled the facility.

Welp, I clicked for a few seconds, but it’s clear just from that guy’s expression that they haven’t caught him yet.

It’s good that they keep updating the public, but man, they need to get this guy.

I am amazed they haven't yet. Especially if he's still in the Longwood area.

With this small of a footprint for this length of time, I am surprised that the dogs have not been able to track him until caught.

Other than hunting dogs, I am not sure how effective tracking dogs usually are.

Just my thoughts.

Unless they haven't told us, it also sounds as if there haven't been any break-ins in the past few days, so what is he eating? Did he potentially steal enough non-perishable food initially (stuffed in those backpacks)? Water can be obtained from the streams but good luck not getting sick quickly. There still may be corn in fields (horse, or human), but he'd be eating it raw.

I have so much respect for LE enduring the heat and humidity. Great news that the K-9 dog is making a full recovery.

The police captain seemed discouraged while speaking of an eventual capture.

Just my thoughts.

Not 100%, unfortunately, and in another case I followed - think it was Kiely Rodni's - authorities said helicopter searches are only effective about a mere 15% of the time (or was it 5%?). They can only fly so low and have to go quickly, often over dense areas of trees and undergrowth. It's not like the person they're looking for is wearing neon green waving. They're not going to spot them tucked under a log or in someone's shed. I guess the chopper searches are partly to scare the person into surrendering, and partly to hope that they may get lucky and spot them on the move.

<modsnip: quoted post removed>
I think it was open above. He was outdoors when he scaled that section of brick wall, so I think he got right onto the roof, and they said he bypassed one set of barbed wire and then a second. I'm looking at the aerial view of the prison but can't figure out where that may have taken place. Anyone else know? Perhaps even the outdoor areas should have "lids" of impermeable grid-like structures to let air and light through, but nothing else.

Yeah, I am curious how he is surviving out there. It has been extremely hot but if he's in the woods I'm sure he's staying under the shade. He has access to water, but I agree about him getting sick. I have gone to a place called Alapocas to swim since I was in high school. It's the Brandywine River, there's a waterfall to jump off of and rope swings to use. However, anyone that ever went there always told me to make sure I never get any water in my mouth. The Dupont Experimental Station is literally right on the river and I'm sure things are getting pumped out there. He may be further upstream so that may not be an issue for him but I've always been cognizant of not swallowing much water, if any, anytime I have been anywhere on the Brandywine.
