PA PA - Edward Hower Maps, 39, Stroudsburg, 21 June 1962

Some interesting info here. If he murdered them, why not take stocks/bonds or something worth $? Why risk robbing a bank later and risking being caught?

You're right. I can't understand why the file would be destroyed unless they were 100 percent sure he was dead. Then again there's good old bureaucratic ineptitude.
Then the next question has to be; Why would they just not come out and say it? Any chance that Maps was an informant for LE and this was the result?

I wondered that and wondered if he was in a program of some sort (like the lsd program of the 60s) that caused him to freak and they knew it

I wonder why the case file says that height cannot be estimated. They have a body. I thought they could estimate height based on the femur etc. I suppose, in this case, there may not be a femur found, and I am making erroneous assumptions.

Bumping this thread up. The FBI has maintained a "Most Wanted" list for the past 75 years or more, and they update it whenever someone on the list is captured or killed.

Sometimes, they simply drop a fugitive from the list when there has been no contact or clue for an extended period of time.

Kinda reversed found this, but was looking for potential match for a UID mentioned here: The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

One of the commenters said that the UID might be from PA, NJ or DE since the body was found in an ofshoot of the Delaware river, so I did some digging. One of the only missing people that match the stats of this UID (that's within that 3 state range), turns out to be Edward Maps, so I looked at where he was last seen: Stroudsburg. This happens to butt up directly against the Delaware River, which has me believing this might truly be him.

Would love to hear some thoughts as to why or why he might not be this UID

That's a good possible match!

That's a good possible match!
Did some digging after the fact since I didn't realize how wanted he is. I've heard that it's most likely true that he killed his wife and kid, so most people think he fled and layed low somewhere, but i heard one theory in 2022 that apparently they think his father in law did it and killed him and might have dumped his body in the river. Regardless as to if he did it or not, i think it might be him. Haven't submitted it as a possible match yet, but i think its at the very least plausable.

Submitted the match to the Doe Network. This is what they said back

"Your suggested match has previously been submitted to law enforcement who were unable to compare the two due to incomplete identifiers"

Well now we know the status of that potential match. Good work, keep looking!
