Laudenslager pleaded no contest to third-degree murder and aggravated assault in February 2008 and was sentenced to 30 to 60 years on March 4, 2008. The aggravated assault charge stemmed from Laudenslager threatening a police officer with a knife when he tried to arrest her.

Pierson’s friends found Laudenslager’s guilty plea — and the resulting lack of answers — unsatisfying, and said so at her sentencing.

"You chose to end Elaine's beautiful, beautiful life," said Gail Hiestand. "You so selfishly ended her life and in the end, you again took the selfish way out pleading no contest.”
