Before a civil case could get underway Monday, the family of Ellen Greenberg and Philadelphia officials reached an agreement to reopen the teacher's death investigation more than 14 years after she was found stabbed to death in her Manayunk apartment.

The settlement reached on Feb. 3, 2025, means that the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office will reopen and reinvestigate Greenberg’s manner of death.

So very unfortunate that since March 2011, the lynchpin then and now has been the absolute supreme power and authority given a Medical Examiner by the state of PA and local/County government to determine an individuals legal manner of death-- without impunity!

To be clear, Dr. Osbourne, assistant ME for the County at the time, ruled EG's manner of death a HOMICIDE on January 27, 2011 following her autopsy, but after Police publicly disputed the findings, Dr. Osbourne later changed the manner of death to SUICIDE on March 7, (signed April 4, 2011).

Per Osbourne's Verification Statement dated January 31, 2025, he provided his understanding that he is no longer empowered to amend EG's death certificate because he no longer holds a PA license, and is no longer employed by the PA's ME office, but certified his belief on this date that EG's manner of death should be other than suicide.

Today the Greenberg's lawyer announced the legal action pending with the City and Supreme Court are over and they now seek the criminal investigation to EG's murder reopened ASAP.

Again, the 14 year hold up has been receiving an amended manner of death change from anything other than suicide!

EG's parents have proven so much more gracious here..... JMO

As a Philadelphia courtroom was packed with prospective jurors Monday, last-minute negotiations headed off a legal showdown between the parents of Ellen Greenberg and two Philadelphia officials who helped label her 2011 death by 20 stab wounds a suicide.

The settlement accepted by Judge Michael Erdos ends the Greenbergs’ civil suit against former Philadelphia Chief Medical Examiner Sam Gulino and Homicide Det. John McNamee. The Greenbergs’ suit accused the two of conspiring to cover up evidence of homicide in Ellen’s case and sought unspecified monetary damages for emotional distress suffered by the Greenbergs.

Wow. Huge development!! Ellen's parents and Mike Williams' mother all singlehandedly i believe helped find justice for Ellen and Mike.
I am assuming that an arrest will be forthcoming in the next few months...

It's no doubt huge, but I'm very skeptical they'll ever be able to file charges here. I think this investigation was so compromised, that there's just not going to be any way to meet the burden of proof. I really hope I'm wrong.

After Monday's settlement, attorneys representing the city declined to comment. However, attorneys representing the Greenbergs said they were told the new review would be done expeditiously.

A medical examiner now says that Ellen Greenberg, who was found dead with 20 stab wounds, died by homicide and not suicide.
Greenberg was found dead inside of her home in 2011, but the medical examiner initially ruled she took her own life.

@BrianEntin

Big development in the Ellen Greenberg case -- after *14 YEARS* the medical examiner says he does not believe Ellen's death was a suicide. Will it ever officially be changed?
What does @GovernorShapiro have to say about this?I'll be in Philly this week.

I can't believe how hard Ellen's parents have fought. They spent $700,000 of their own money for YEARS fighting the city. If they didn't fight, fight, fight and push this lawsuit along for YEARS they never would have gotten this statement from Dr. Osbourne. WE NEED JUSTICE!

If it takes $700,000 to get this far in a botched homicide investigation, how many more cases like this are swept under the rug? Most of us don’t have $700K to fight for justice for our children. Jmo

I can't recall a single case, news story, or anything about a person attempting suicide by stabbing, let alone 20 times. Not even as a nurse, or from nurse friends etc. Statistically men are more likely to choose violent methods than women. It would take a LOT to convince me that someone wanting to end their suffering in this world would choose to do so in this way, by suffering unnecessarily. My goodness, there is everything wrong here. I wish her family swift justice and real answers.

ETA: 20 stab wounds to me screams jilted lover or extreme psychopath, someone probably known by others for losing control and acting out. JMO.

Every single person involved in this should be serving lengthy prison sentences. These parents deserve millions from the city.

MOO.
