Good heavens, the poor woman who died had previously survived a fire in this same residence (less than a year earlier, in January 2022–wth is going on at this place?!) and had asked authorities there to move her to a lower floor expressly for the purpose of being able to escape should such a tragedy befall her again. But she was left in her 14th-floor unit, and this time she died after struggling down to the fifth floor of the building in an attempt to escape. If she’d been moved, she likely would’ve made it out alive.

And here’s another tragic fire at a senior residence in the greater Pittsburgh area, leaving another vulnerable person (60 years old) dead. Methinks the state needs to tighten up enforcement of its fire codes at these types of housing facilities.

Also, I was surprised to read that the paramedics evacuated folks via the elevator in this incident—it was my understanding that elevators are generally off-limits for evacuation in the event of a fire.
