lol. I looked at grocery logos all morning, too! I can't find an A&P logo where the "A" has a crossbar extending to the right (to make it look like a 4.) All the ones I find for A&P extend to the left.

Look at the slideshow on the link I put up. Odd shaped A, Uniontown, Pa.

Arrrrgh! I have this insane browser that is opening up the slideshow as seperate tabs and none of them have Uniontown, PA. I'll keep trying.

Finally got to Uniontown. I think the A and the P are too pointy at the top. The Family Dollar store in Charlotte, NC looks like a match if they were the Family 49ct stores in the eighties (which, of course, I doubt!)

I wonder if the Groceteria.com webmaster could post a query about the bags on his site. They have a forum for quizzing each other about grocery logos, and I get the feeling this is where people who know everything about grocery-store logos gather. I tried to email the webmaster, but the email wouldn't go through; again I think it may be this browser of mine.

Anyone think the PA State POlice might have more photos they would share?

(Never give a bunch of O/C people a mystery like this...:p )

I did find a post where someone was remembering old days when (scroll down a ways):

*$.49 cent faygos in a glass bottle.
http://www.insidesouthwest.com/bulletinboard/viewtopic.php?t=4&highlight=faygo

I also did some searches on 1988 and 1987 and found that 49 cents was a pretty popular price to charge for things then as well.

However I am also looking at all the other good ideas people are posting.

So far the only fazio fact linked to the number 49 was in a golfing article but I like the font for the fazios ad someone posted recently.

I definitely see a big number 4 under the FA.

As far as the ATER goes, how about EATERY?
In Maryland, there is a mall called White Flint Mall (Montgomery County)...It has had a food court called La Eatery for a long time. Now it's just called The Eatery. I seem to recall going to the movies when I was about 8 (1978) and watching Benji and then hitting the food court afterwards. I cannot recall what the sign said though...Richard, you recall this???

I have heard the tearm "eatery" before, but not sure where I first heard it. Many malls today have food courts, but I think that each concession stand would have its own bags or containers, rather than one bag for all.

Good point.
That "-ater" or "-ated" word could be "Federated" since that's the name of both a food wholesaler and a grocery conglomerate. Or "refrigerated," or "incorporated," or "theater." Does it look like there could be a lot more letters before the ones you can see?

The "FA" word looks like FA*Y* and maybe one more letter at the end to me.

I keep thinking it is " operated" (as in owned and operated or coin operated), however the first letter visible in that line looks like an "R", but it could be an "O" with a smudge or crinkle below it.

Gads I am trying so hard to see a 4 under the FA and cant see it.. I went to the yahoo photo album someone posted and had the enhancements and colorizing pictures printed at target (forgive me I am new to this group so I dont know who everyone is and dont recall whos post it was linked on).

The piece on the right side of the O has tears that seem to match the bottom and looks like it fits together so the bag would be pulled up into the O....

You guys are great! I cant belive how many great ideas there are.

I couldn't see the 4 either, at first, but now I see it, it's much bigger than the lettering above it. The only thing that bothers me about the 4 is in the upper right hand corner of the 4 the white coloring of the lettering keeps going up. When I initially looked at it, I thought it was a YO ot TO. Awagner, I just p.m'd you.
