PA - Gabrielle Bechen, 12, Greensboro, 13 June 2006

Although the ATV Bechen was riding was relatively small and has a gasoline tank of a little more than a gallon, Christy said the number of ATVs in the area meant it would not be hard for her to find more gas if she needed to.

The above statement makes it sound like there were numerous ATV's in the area at the time of her disappearence. Did anyone see her riding her ATV that morning?

Unfortuately it sounds like she met a pedophile unless the area had serious defaults. Cliffs, deep creeks, other natural phenomena. Does anyone know this area?

  • #23
this really is a sad case. is there any clue as to where she was headed on this ATV? and they haven't found any sign of the ATV? no tracks left behind or anything? too strange.

The area is rural. The terrain is very rough, there are ravines, cliffs, creeks, ect. There are many coal mines in this area-old shafts, drain pipes ect. It was not unusual for Gabby to ride her quad in the immediate area, however she did not usually go into the woods alone. The three possiblilities that the police are reporting are all still possible. Please, please pray for her safe return.

Federal agents, local authorities and volunteers continued to search on Saturday for Gabrielle Bechen, a 12-year-old Greene County girl who has been missing since Tuesday.

Bechen went on an all-terrain vehicle ride on Tuesday morning in Dunkard Township, near Waynesburg.
Authorities have worked all week looking for the girl. On Saturday, the state police announced the five-day search would end.

"They are confident that they've covered this four-square-mile area that was their primary search target with total coverage, and she is not in there, in that location," said Trooper Joseph Christy.

They should have found her ATV by now. Maybe she did run away from home.

I'm wondering now if she did run away...maybe she is being hidden by someone, ATV and all.

Over a four-day period that ended yesterday, hundreds of devoted volunteers scoured several square miles of thick woods and green fields in a remote corner of Greene County in search of Gabrielle Miranda Bechen.

Yet they found no sign of the 12-year-old girl, who drove off on a low-powered all-terrain vehicle Tuesday morning and disappeared.

Now law enforcement officials, including state police and the FBI, will handle the bulk of the search.

"The volunteers have been tremendous," state Trooper Joseph Christy said. "We could not have covered the amount of land we covered without them."

Gabrielle left her home on Presock Road shortly after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Since then, police search and rescue teams, volunteer firefighters, and K-9 teams have combed the area around Greensboro and Bobtown.

The search also has attracted more than a dozen volunteer organizations, including the Shenandoah Mountain Rescue Group and Appalachian Search and Rescue Conference. Volunteers will significantly curb their involvement starting today, Trooper Christy said.

Greene Co. Girl Found Dead

(KDKA) Bobtown After five days of searching, a missing 12-year-old girl was found dead early Sunday morning.

Gabrielle Bechen, of Greene County, was found at 4:15 a.m., according to the Greene County Coroner’s office.

She was last seen riding her ATV on Tuesday morning.

Police have charged Jeffrey Robert Martin, 48, with criminal homicide, aggravated assault and four counts of tampering with physical evidence.

The cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Bechen was found in a six-foot grave on a farm near her residence.

Martin was a caretaker on the farm - a horse farm that Bechen frequented to spend time with the horses.

On Saturday, Bechen's ATV was found by a civilian searcher - also on the farm - at 4:15 p.m. It was partially buried in a pile of manure. It was found on a section of the farm that had not yet been searched.

The search was called off as of 6 p.m. Saturday.

Two helicopters, search dogs and ATV's were all part of the search.

Over 100 volunteers spent their weekend searching for any clues.

The volunteers covered a 4-square mile near Bobtown.

what such a horrible ending for this beautyful childs life, I hope this man gets what is coming to him. I would not have ever guessed that this was the way this would end, I had thought that she may have traveled into the woods way off from home and had an accident. what such a sad ending!!! prayers for her family and this precious little angel..

This was a most unexpected resolution to this young lady's missing status. Having been in the woods in her area I had fully hoped she was just missing/injured and could be found.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family and hopefully swift justice to the horrible murderer.

Man In Custody, Charged In Greene Co. Girl's Death

(KDKA) Bobtown A Greene County man said that he confronted and then strangled a 12-year-old Greene County girl who had been missing since last Tuesday.

State Police have arrested Jeffrey Robert Martin, of New Geneva.

Martin, 48, is the caretaker of the farm where authorities found the body of Gabrielle Bechen buried in a shallow grave early Sunday morning.

“It was not what you would consider a fresh grave site," said PA State Trooper Joseph Christy. "It was an area that looked like a dumping area for dirt and rocks.”

Martin has been charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault and four counts of tampering with physical evidence.

The official cause of her death is pending an autopsy.

Search teams had been scouring a four-square mile area near Bechen’s home in Dunkard Township for days but hadn’t found anything.

Police say a major break in the case came when a civilian searcher found the girl’s ATV on the farm, partially buried under a pile of manure around 4:15 p.m. Saturday.

Almost two hours later at 6 p.m., the search was called off for the day.

With the help of cadaver dogs, authorities found her body around 4:35 a.m. Sunday.

Police have not given a possible motive for Bechen’s death.

Stay with KDKA for more details

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Thomas Schuster, Bechen drove her ATV up the main driveway of the farm around 8:20 a.m. and engaged Martin in conversation.
Martin, according to the affidavit, allegedly told police Bechen made "accusations of misconduct" toward him and that he "grew upset and grabbed the victim's arm."

Martin told police Bechen got away from his grasp and ran down the driveway but fell. When she fell, Martin allegedly told police he jumped on top of her and wrapped his hands around her throat until she quit moving, according to the affidavit.

Police alleged Martin used farm equipment to move Bechen's body across the road and into another field located on the farm. Martin, the affidavit claims, told police he used a tractor to bury Bechen's body.

Police further alleged Martin then used farm equipment to transport Bechen's ATV, helmet and shoes down a horse path on the farm, where he manually dug a hole for the ATV, the affidavit states, noting that Martin buried Bechen's helmet and shoes in two holes located about 30 feet away from the ATV.

Suspect in girl's death lived on fringes of society

Accused of succession of minor crimes

Tuesday, June 20, 2006

By Milan Simonich, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- For the past 25 years, Jeffrey Robert Martin lived on the fringes. He collected welfare, worked odd jobs, sold marijuana, consorted with thieves and harassed at least two young women with lewd phone calls.

he tells a story of jumping on her after she fell and strangled her to death because she accused him of misconduct and so on, so then why was her shoes taken off and buried elsewhere. something tells me that he most likely took the opertunity of the moment to rape and then strangled her to death. to just kill her for any other reason just doesn't add up, if he had in the past touched her or whatever, she would have already told her parents of the misconduct. rape is what this man intended on and appears he finally got the moment to do it.

All LE has to go on is the creep's story about what happened. If she had been standing there just talking to him why did she have her shoes and helmet off. Especially her shoes. When they do an autopsy they will be able to tell if she was raped. Poor little girl.

It is disgusting. Over and over we see this, and over and over crimes of this nature happen to kids. She was riding her ATV and experiencing sunshine, a basic right of all humans. Whether you are a kid or an adult.

The laws against sexual predators need to get a lot stricter.I believe they are underscoring the right to life in this country.
