Court hears confession in killing of girl, 12

'I'm still scared, panicked, and I started choking her,' Jeffrey R. Martin told police

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- In a flat, matter-of-fact tone, farmhand Jeffrey R. Martin told state police he strangled a 12-year-old girl after she threatened to accuse him of molestation.

He said he had hold of her arm, but she broke free, got off the ATV and ran. Mr. Martin went after her. He said Gabby fell on the gravel, enabling him to catch her.

I can't even imagine a little girl riding up to an adult and saying such a thing.
For him to even bring up molestation makes me believe that he did something sexual to her. She probably just rode over to the farm to see the horses and he decided beings they were alone that he would take advantage of a little girl. I wonder if the autopsy report showed any thing sexual or if they could tell? Unless he had actual sex with her it might not even show. I do know one thing though....he story is total bull chit. He is trying to place all of the blame on the child. It isn't going to work.

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- A farmhand has been formally sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl on a southwestern Pennsylvania horse farm.

A Greene County judge also added 23 to 46 years in prison when he sentenced Jeffrey Martin, 51, on Wednesday.

A jury in May convicted Martin of first-degree murder and other crimes for killing Gabrielle Bechen on June 13, 2006. The same jury took about an hour to decide Martin deserved to be executed.

In Pennsylvania, a death sentence must be formally imposed by a judge.

The additional sentence the judge has imposed for the other crimes won't be relevant unless Martin successfully appeals the conviction on the murder charge. Then the additional prison sentence would determine when Martin could be paroled.

Bechen disappeared while riding her all-terrain vehicle at a Greensboro horse farm where Martin worked.

In an audiotape of Martin's alleged confession, which was played in court, Martin said Bechen told him she was going to tell her mom and dad that he molested her. He said he ran after, jumped on top of her and choked her until she became unconscious.

Bechen's body was found five days later.

Martin denies killing Bechen. He said a man came to the farm with a body and the ATV and offered him $100 to help bury the vehicle.
