I'm really not understanding why children are treated differently...why can't it just be based on who is the sickest and needs the transplant the most at the time, whether adult or child?

I think it's also a matter of size?

There needs to be more donors!!!

It's the ultimate in recycling...;)

There needs to be a much bigger push and national media coverage for the need for organ donation. It should become the norm.

There is also a rule that prevents foster children from being recipients. A few years ago there was a foster child denied someone stepped up to adopt so she could be placed on the list. the adoption process couldn't be expedited fast enough and iirc she died waiting.

Yes, but her doctors say they think they can operate successfully with an adult donor...I hope they get a chance to try!

Agree, somebody needs to start a petition with care2 or similar site....I hope her parents stay active on this whether she gets a donor or not.

Very sad...didn't know that; does that apply nationally? Haven't heard of it in Fl.

Thank you! A partial quote from your link:

The choices made by the transplant team in Heather’s case are not part of a set of national standards. On July 8th, 2008 doctors at Shands hospital in Florida removed a 15yr old disabled foster child from an organ transplant list due to his ”uncertain living situation”. The child’s foster care caseworker then drove him to Jackson Memorial Hospital where a transplant was successfully performed when a liver became available.

Having individual doctors determine if foster care is a suitable environment for children undergoing transplant surgery seems to be a very flawed practice. In the case of the 15yr old child in Miami, one team judged that his foster home environment was unsuitable for a life saving transplant while another team believed it was suitable. If his case worker had not driven him to Jackson Memorial, he would have never received a transplant.

I believe a living person can specify to whom the recipient of the harvested organ is to be.
I personally know people who have donated a kidney to a sibling/offspring.

Unlike with kidney, you can not donate both lungs and still be alive afterwards. She can not get a donation from a live donor.

Sounds like that if she were to get adults lungs, they would have to be cut down in order to fit her.
Which is likely not the best solution, but her parents are obviously desperate at this point.

BBM

I don't think there is any parent who wouldn't be desperate. If she died and they hadn't tried everything they possibly could they'll feel enormous guilt. If she passes away now at least they've tried everything they possibly could. JMO

I was going to be a donor, but then they discovered the hepatitis C and that pretty much cancelled me as a possible donor. I've never been told by a doctor I can't, but I can't see how I could be.

Transplant vote seeks medical and legal balance

KEVIN BEGOS, AP

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Faced with a federal judge's order in the heart-wrenching cases of two terminally ill children seeking lung transplants, a national review board sought a balance that will keep such decisions in the hands of doctors, not lawyers or judges.

The executive committee of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network held an emergency teleconference Monday evening and resisted making rule changes for children under 12 seeking lung transplants, but it created a special appeal and review system to hear such cases...

Pa. girl who took on donor rules gets transplant

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A 10-year-old girl whose efforts to qualify for an organ donation drew public debate over how organs are allocated was getting a lung transplant Wednesday, her family said.

Sarah Murnaghan, who suffers from severe cystic fibrosis, was receiving the transplant Wednesday at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, a family spokeswoman said.

Her health was deteriorating when a federal judge intervened last week, giving her a chance at the much larger list of organs from adult donors.

It wasn't immediately clear if the girl was getting an adult lung. A hospital spokeswoman, Dana Mortensen, said she had no information to release and would not confirm if Murnaghan was getting a transplant.

Murnaghan's mother, Janet, said in a Facebook post that the family was "overwhelmed with emotions" and thanked all her supporters...

http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/12/health/pennsylvania-girl-transplant/index.html?hpt=hp_t2 Sarah Murnaghan, a 10-year-old Pennsylvania girl with cystic fibrosis whose family fought to have her prioritized for adult organs, is getting a new set of lungs, her family told CNN Wednesday. Murnaghan was in surgery in the morning.

I'm praying that she gets through this and lives a long time. Does anyone know if the cystic fibrosis will attack the new lungs?

Also, this reminds me of a sad story from when I worked at the hospital. A person was scheduled to get a kidney transplant and they had everything set up in the operating room and the patient was already there, I don't think they'd cut into them yet. When the kidney arrived it had been harvested so poorly the surgeon couldn't use it. That doctor was ANGRY! I can't imagine how the patients family felt. I don't know if the person ended up getting a good kidney in time or not.

I'm a registered organ donor in Michigan where you can sign up when you renew your driver's license. I don't know if all states do this, but I'm pleased that MI does.

In NYS it's on the back of your drivers license. It says "I hereby make an anatomical gift." Then you sign below.

That's an odd way of wording it. :waitasec:
It just says "Would you like to be an organ donor, check yes or no" in Utah.
There is also ads playing while you are waiting at the DMV, encouraging people to donate. :seeya:

And I think this article will answer your question about the new lungs:

Thanks.

This is from the article;

...Some patients do much better after a lung transplant because the lung damage is the driving factor behind the illness,Franco said. "Once you fix that part, everything else is much easier to take care of," she said....

Let's hope she's one of those patients.
