Firefighters are battling a major fire at a church in the Parkside section of Philadelphia.

Initial reports indicate that a daycare inside the church was evacuated.

The fire roared from the steeple atop the Greater Bible Way Temple sometime before 3 p.m.

The church is also home to a children's day care center at the corner of North 52nd Street and Warren Street. The religious complex takes up a large triangular property enclosed by North 52nd Street, Lancaster Avenue and Bible Way.

"Right now the fire is not under control," said Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel.
Thiel says at least one person was transported to an area hospital for unknown injuries.

Action News has learned that there were workers on the roof at the time of the fire.

"This is still an active firefight. We'll certainly be here all night," Theil says. "If you're having any breathing difficulties, or you have any reason that you might think you might need help, call 911," Thiel says.

The Red Cross of Eastern PA and other local agencies are assisting firefighters at this hour.
