Hermitage Baby Girl Doe
Hermitage, PA (Mercer County)

Age: Newborn white female (1 week old +/-)

Date: Found deceased July 2,1970

Location: Found near a dirt road off Lynnwood Drive (close to then-named Swamp Road, later renamed Broadway Avenue). The area was known as the Taylor Sand Banks parking, and the city of Hermitage, PA was still known as Hickory Township (Mercer County)

Narrative:

On July 2, 1970, a Sears employee found the remains of a white newborn baby girl near a dirt road. According to a Sharon Herald story from July 3, 1970, the baby had been there for about 12 to 24 hours and was dressed in baby clothes. The Mercer County Coroner determined the baby died from exposure.

In 2020, Hermitage Police appealed to the person who placed the baby in the woods: “Only you can help your loved ones understand. DNA can't do that. We want to give you this opportunity to talk to us. ... Please come and speak with us before the DNA does."

Hermitage Police can be reached at 724-983-6780(report #10-3487) or hermitagepd(at)hermitage.net
