GUILTY PA - Howard Nicholson, newborn, fatally mauled by dog, McKeesport, 16 Feb 2012

I knew this thing was homemade from the moment I saw it. What vet is going to put something like that on? That said, i hope the guy who adopted this dog doesn't have little kids.

Would a dog who killed a child be adoptable? Don't they normally put a dog down when something like this happens? I don't understand. I am really wondering if this dog is being scapegoated by the parents!

Tuesday at Magistrate Eugene Riazzi’s office, McKeesport police cited Brandy Furlong for harboring a dangerous animal and four counts each of failing to have her pets vaccinated or properly licensed.

Then, with no explanation, all of those charges against Furlong were dropped Wednesday morning.

When the district attorney's office completes its review, McKeesport police will be able to refile the citations, he said.

WPXI TV says that a man adopted the dog......got it medical help.
The dog was in pain........that was a 'homemade splint' and broken leg was not set properly.
The dog was NOT eating.
The dog is not being blamed.
Just shown a leg with a new cast from a vet on the husky.
The huskey already looks better.
Something seems 'off' with the mother.
All 4 dogs had no shots, no licenses, I think we will be hearing more.

Wait a second...now there was a "bite to the head"? I thought there were no bite marks. What the heck?

I feel badly for both the dog and the baby. If I were the parent/owner, I would never be able to look at that dog again. HOWEVER, I am a little suspicious that perhaps the dog didn't cause these injuries.

That dog looks terrified...days later it's still trembling. Something is off here. I can't place it, but it's off.

I am confused. First, head trauma, but no bites. Now I read about a bite.

Is this a case of poor reporting or is something not adding up here?

Come on ME, I want to know what your findings are.

Police say the mother left her child in a baby carrier on the living room floor while she used an upstairs bathroom.

Returning, she found the family Husky standing over her bleeding infant son. Howard, just two days old, died 90-minutes later of severe head trauma.

http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2012/02/17/me-mauled-newborn-died-from-blunt-force-trauma/

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner says the baby died from blunt force trauma to the head. He ruled the death accidental.

I'm still trying to find the article that says 'dog bite'

By muzzle, I guess they meant the dog's snout and not a muzzle that he would wear. And I don't know what mauling means specifically, but that seems to be a bite reference to me. At first, they said blunt force trauma. So as far as how I read the articles anyway, at first they were saying blunt force, then bite and now mauling. So I dont know.

Husky that killed infant to remain in quarantine, receive evaluation

Officials said the dog was underfed and also had a broken leg that was not treated by a veterinarian. Experts said the dog could have attacked because of the circumstances it was under.

The 21-year-old mother was charged with harboring a dangerous dog and other violations.

The dog will remain in a quarantine facility, and the judge said it will also be evaluated by a professional trainer and behaviorist.

At their next meeting, the judge said all parties involved will discuss the possibility of placing Nikko in a permanent home.

From January 2013:

http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2013/01/15/mother-of-baby-mauled-by-pet-husky-sentenced/

A western Pennsylvania woman will spend three years on probation, including six months on house arrest, after pleading guilty to child endangerment in the mauling death of her newborn son by the family’s pet Husky...

Furlong and the baby’s father are still living together and no longer have pets. She’s also hoping to get partial custody of two other children, ages 3 and 7, who live with their father...

The dog has been court-ordered to live in an animal sanctuary.
