GUILTY PA - Husband charged in cyanide poisoning death of Dr. Autumn Klein

Husband not welcome on the property. Interesting, considering he has not been charged with anything.

"Channel 11’s Alan Jennings has confirmed that the husband of a prominent UPMC doctor who ingested a lethal dose of cyanide last month is no longer welcome on UPMC property.

That is a very interesting turn of events. In the video at same link: the husband "over-nighted" the cyanide 2 days before the death.

So he was in a hurry to kill her. He did not want to go on that conference trip with her. I'm waiting for the "other woman " to appear.

Oh, geez, I didn't have time to watch the video, I just wanted to quickly share the article. Hoping more comes out soon since he hasn't been arrested. Overnighted? Hmmm

Wow that's weird. If he did it how truly dumb. You personally overnight the same poison your wife dies from. Amazing. I can think of no reason why he wouldn't be allowed back on the property.

There is new info in this link. Interview with Autumn's mother. She was supposed to stay at the couple's home and babysit grand daughter while they went to a convention the next day. Also strange way husband told daughter about mother's illness, and how he asked talked with other doctors about wife's case but not using her name.

I think he didn't want to go to conference. Husband maybe smart but he may lack common sense. Also probably thought no one would believe that the highly respected Dr could kill his wife.

I was looking around to try and find a neurology convention/conference... no luck on that date unless it was in another country. Dr. Klein was chosen by the American Association of Neurology (AAN) to be one of about 10 Emerging Leaders in the field 2012-2013 (you have to be under 45 to apply for the award) so I thought maybe that was applicable, but again the dates don't seem to apply.

I haven't seen anything reported about them planning to go to any conferences.

Read above, that is what Autumn Kleins mom said... she was to come babysit the next day.

Thanks. I missed that.

I'm pretty sure it would be the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Scientific Conference, which started April 21 (social event evening of 4/21, lectures started April 22) and it was in Washington DC. The focus of the conference was "Developing Therapy for Neuromuscular Disease".

This is the same kind of research the neurologist I worked for did and he was the one who used cyanide in his research.

The video on the news link below, provided by time, reports that Dr. Klein's husband is "locked out" assuming locked out of any facilities he had security clearance to enter. Pretty serious matter, especially with no charges against him yet. From a liability standpoint of the hospital and research facility, it sure makes sense to me. jmo

" From a liability standpoint of the hospital and research facility, it sure makes sense to me."

I would be willing to bet that the lawyers for UPMC were able to find some legal reason to be able to take this action. Perhaps something as simple as "failure to use a proper purchase order for lab supplies"?

I too am waiting for the other woman to come forward. And whoever she is, she better hope he didn't bring any extra cyanide home from the lab with him!

It's perfectly fine to purchase lab supplies with an University issued credit card, so I don't think they could deny him access for failing to use a purchase order. He doesn't have to use a purchase order.

  • #174
Most likely he's barred because of a finding that came out of the investigation into his wife's death.

I doubt very much he was following the university's procedures for doing things, and that includes the purchase of the cyanide. Could also include financial records being kept improperly or a violation of policy in his research.

We don't know what the policies for the credit card are.

We do, since university posted it on line. He wouldn't be personally keeping financial records, that's what business persons are for.

Just putting this quote back in here for timeline reference. Would they have been going to the conference that early? Maybe so, I know sometimes there are preconference activities like meeting, workshops, etc. or maybe it was time together? I guess, they could have intended to be with the parents for a day or two before leaving for the conference.

Ms. Klein and her husband, William, intended to travel to Pittsburgh on April 18 to take care of their 6-year-old granddaughter Cianna while her parents attended a medical conference.

Instead, Ms. Klein said she received a call from Mr. Ferrante close to midnight April 17 saying that her daughter, who had returned home from her lab between 11 and 11:30 p.m. that night, had collapsed and was en route to the hospital. The three of them were the only ones inside the house, she said he told her.

There may or may not be another woman, but I think that if he did this, it will turn out to be a narcissistic murder.

Some things I can't seem to find, e.g. Ferrantes ex wife by whom he had two older kids. And as for motive, if Ferrante is an amazing researcher, I wonder if he was living up to the publication expectations of a hot place like Pitt? I casually looked at his publications, not much lately, from what I saw. Would missing his old lab where he was apparently idolized, do severe things to his ego? Did his research have flaws? Wouldnt he be presenting at that conference? He didn't seem to want to go to that conference. And maybe there is no other woman. Just my opinions and questions...

I couldn't find where he was presenting.

I did find something about his kids... their names are in Klein's obituary.

I'm thinking that maybe mom is not alive?

I'm thinking that maybe mom is not alive? I can't give the reference but looks like the son married and it only lists the dad as a parent....Robert Ferrante lived in Canton, MA

I think she is (unless he was married more than once before) because homicide detectives went to Massachusetts to interview his ex-wife.
