PA PA - Hyun Jong "Cindy" Song, 21, State College, 1 Nov 2001

  • #41

The only current lead in the case is that Cindy was kidnapped and murdered by Hugo Selenski. In 2003, it was discovered that Selenski's six-acre property was used as the final resting place for at least 12 people, many of whom were burned in a pit in his backyard. Cindy so far has not been tied to any of the remains found on Selenski's property, but an informant, Paul Weakley, claims that Selenski and an accomplice, Michael Kerkowski, kidnapped and murdered Cindy. Selenski was convicted in 2015 of the murder of two of those found on his property: Kerkowski and Tammy Fassett.

''On Halloween night 24 years ago, Penn State student Hyun Jong Song, known to friends as Cindy, joined the throngs of students for a night of partying and revelry.

Donning a bunny costume, she and her friends went to Player’s Night Club, now The Basement, on West College Avenue, where they danced, drank, and enjoyed the holiday. After the club, the girls reportedly went to a friend’s house to play video games for a few hours.

At 4 a.m. on November 1, 2001, the girls made their way home. Song’s roommate, Stacy Paik, left Song at her apartment on Blue Course Drive. That was the last time she, or anyone, would see Song alive.''

''Song’s case remains open with the Ferguson police, and her family has not given up hope that she will return home unharmed one day.
If you know anything about Cindy Song’s disappearance, you can contact Ferguson Township Police at (814) 237-1172.''

Circumstances of Disappearance

Hyun - AKA Cindy - was last seen being dropped off in front of her State College Park Apartment on West Clinton Avenue in the early morning hours (between 3:30-4AM) of November 1, 2001 after attending a Halloween party at Player's Nite Club in the 100 block of West College Avenue, followed by going to a friend's house.

Evidence in her apartment shows that she entered her apartment; the backpack she was carrying was found undisturbed inside. Her purse was missing. Police believe that she may have gone to a 24-hour Giant supermarket nearby, but by the time the police checked there, survelliance videotapes had already been taped over.

The only current lead in the case is that Cindy was kidnapped and murdered by Hugo Selenski. In 2003, it was discovered that Selenski's six-acre property was used as the final resting place for at least 12 people, many of whom were burned in a pit in his backyard. I checked the weather for State College on 11/01/01. It was around 43 degrees. I could not imagine someone wearing a skimpy costume not putting of a pair of jeans or something before going out.

Why would she take off her eyelashes but leave the rabbit ears on, especially when going to a store?

I think it could be as simple as the eyelashes were becoming loose and annoying. What I picture in my minds eye is her stepping in, taking off her boots and putting down her bags, then briefly going to the toilet - to pee or puke and check herself in the mirror, then also taking off the eyelashes that were annoying - and then grabbing her purse to go get that late-night snack or milk for the morning coffee or pads or whatever before settling in for the night. Going to the store in the costume is both faster and easyer and also more fun. It's halloween night at college town after all, loads of people in costumes around one would think!

I've done similar pattern loads of time: arrive home from somewhere, dump off your stuff, possibly a quick bathroom trip and then grabbing just my cards for a quick corner store stop in the same clothes and before doing anything else (or sitting down and getting sleepy, it's much harder to leave for the darn milk a while later). And I'd hope the details of her outfit would indicate that: if her boots and her coat were also missing, then it looks like she walked out voluntarily. I'd think a korean girl, drunk or not, would not walk around her apartment in BOOTS in autumn - so if she would have been forcefully removed from the apartment by someone else (dead or alive), most likely her boots would be in the hall near the door where she left them as she entered.

A sad case. The family has been waiting for answers for way too long.

She would have had her cards and stuff with her. She would needed that for the bar.

I could see her removing her eyelashes, but why leave the ears on? She may have left voluntarily, but I doubt it was to go to the store. Another party?

A neighbour might have said come by for a quick drink, so she ditched eyelashes but kept on cute bunny ears? speculation, imo.

Why not leave them on? I would have. It was Halloween and they looked cute on her. I can see why the lashes would have taken a hike immediately, because those seem like they would be insanely annoying (I can't even get them on in the first place, so I'll never know.) I would have kept the rest on if I was going back out though, even if it was just to the store. Maybe she needed smokes, or wanted a few more drinks or some snacks. All things I can see me doing or needing at 4 am after a night out at the bars, if we had stores open that late lol.

Try wearing rabbit ears on your head for a few hours. They are great for bumping into things and, if she was lying down, or even sitting back, reclining slightly, they will get in the way. They are 6" to 9" long.

As for a neighbor, the coat is missing. It is possible that someone came by and said, *Hey, let's go party some more,* and she went out. State College is a 24 hour town. You can go out in public areas at 4:00 AM.

This would be a very real possibility.

I went to school there is the 1980's and things, numerous things, that were open 24 hours, though bars closed at 2:00 AM. You could see movies starting at midnight, or shoot pool until early morning, go to a 24 hour diner.

I remember that a lady friend and I went out for my birthday. Neither of us drank; we were not having sex and were in public most of the time. The next day, I went into the cafeteria and her roommate stood up and announced, "I know where you were until 5:35 in the morning J-------- J-------- , and with who!"

Even in 2001, it would be possible to go out with someone, even platonically.

Agreed, she also could have gone out to a party, a friend's house, anywhere really.

I've done bunny ears a few times on Halloween and I just forgot I was wearing them after a while. If you get drunk enough maybe you just stop noticing 😅

I'm sorry to respond to this twice, and doubly sorry it's OT, but I just can't stop wondering why in God's name your friend's roommate cared? And cared enough to make a scene in a cafeteria? The more I think about it, the more I realize how deranged that is, lol. Touch grass, read a book, do literally anything else with your life, roommate. Yowza.

Forgot about this guy..
Oct., 2025
'Authorities received information from an informant named Paul Weakley. He claimed that Cindy Song had been abducted by Hugo Selenski, a man with a growing reputation as one of Pennsylvania’s most dangerous criminals.
Weakley alleged that Selenski and an accomplice, Michael Kerkowski, had kidnapped a young Asian woman around the time of Cindy’s disappearance. According to the account, she was held against her will in a basement vault until she died.
When police later searched Selenski’s property in Luzerne County, they unearthed the remains of at least five individuals, burned and buried. The discovery horrified the state and confirmed Selenski’s capacity for violence. But among the remains, Cindy was not found.''

Feb 14, 2025
A new documentary on convicted double murderer Hugo Selenski will air on Crime Nation, a docuseries on the CW Network.

I didn't forget about him, but I think it is unlikely. He would have had to have been out and at right spot at exactly the right time.
