His mother lives in the Philadelphia area. He and his brother are from the Philly area as well, based on where they went to high school and where Ian went to college. I don't remember reading anything about why he was at his brother's or how long he had been there, or even what state of mind he was in when he left. It is possible though, he was mainly visiting his brother at Penn State where he is a current student, in State College.
If Ian still lives near his mom and if he were headed back home to the Philly area, 322 would be the road he'd travel on. I've driven that road a gazillion times, as I lived in State College for a year and also my daughter went to Penn State. We drove her back and forth from NJ (Philly area) many times.
If he left without realizing he had no phone and he did run out of gas, then that area of 322 is fairly isolated. West of Harrisburg the Susquehanna River, it follows the Juniata River a long ways, and all there is is the river on one side and farmland, mountains and scattered homes along the way. This offers a theory that he maybe ran into trouble after abandoning his car and had to walk or hitchhike to a gas station. That he hasn't been heard from in 5 days continues to be distressing.
