Police say a 911 call sent Moon Township officers to the scene just after 12:30 p.m. at University Boulevard and Moon Clinton Road, across from Moon Area High School.
That’s where they found a 28-year-old man dead inside the trunk of his car. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Junaid Akhlas.

Investigators cordoned off what appears to be an abandoned gas station.

“Just got here at work around 11 o’clock, and a little bit after we saw the police officers show up to the scene. A little bit after that we saw them pull a body out of the car, think it was a white car and there was definitely blood on the trunk as well,” witness Vince Brougher, of Moon Township, said. “It’s Moon, you don’t see that very often, it’s definitely weird.”

According to police, the victim was reported missing around 8 a.m. in Beaver County. Some of his family members were searching for him when they found his vehicle and called 911.

Investigators say the victim had at least one gunshot wound to the head.

I’m willing to bet this article references Junaid’s extended family. <bbm>

In 2009, an anti-Christian mob of Sunni militants burned down the family home in Gojra, Pakistan, and killed seven people, including the family patriarch, 75-year-old house painter Hameed Pannun Khan. More than 100 Christian homes were burned and looted in aneight-hour rampage by approximately 20,000 people, authorities said at the time.

Christians make up less than 5 percent of the population of Pakistan, which is predominantly Muslim.

Almas Hameed, whose wife and two young children were among the dead, and his remaining family members were left with nothing. And after news reports of the incident, they continued to receive death threats from Islamic militants, forcing them to flee Pakistan for Thailand.

After two years in Thailand, 11 members of the Hameed and Akhlas families were resettled in Beaver in May with the help of Catholic Charities, the Presbyterian Church and several local families. Besides Almas Hameed, they include his four brothers, his dead brother's widow, his niece, his two nephews and his two remaining children.

Eventually, the brother and uncle began searching for Akhlas, beginning at the Walmart, and eventually finding the vehicle and his body, at the abandoned former Texaco gas station.

Det. Todd Wateska found a Stoeger model STR-9 9mm pistol with two magazines with live cartridge cases on the ground behind the gas station, adjacent to the parking lot where Akhlas was found. The gun was later found to be registered to Almas, court papers said.

On Tuesday, Det. Erik Schlarp interviewed another family member who lived with Almas. The family member said they saw an email on Almas' computer from Expedia.com, indicating he booked a flight to Mexico.

Airport officials confirmed Almas entered the airport gate at 9:15 a.m., was on a flight to Cancun that left at 9:49 a.m., and was positively identified on the airport's camera system.

An Uber/Lyft driver later said he received a message at 6:56 a.m. to pick up a passenger at the Super 8 Motel on University Boulevard to take to the airport.

The driver said Almas was carrying a plastic bag in an odd manner and placed it in the garbage at the motel; asked him how long the trip would take, and asked not to speak again until they reached the airport, which was at 7:06 a.m.

Det. Darren Gerlach later confirmed Almas rented a room at the motel at 1:29 a.m., with Dets. Dale Canofari and Laurie McKeel finding the bag in the trash, which contained blood-stained clothes, according to the report.
