Question, o'wise creatures of Websleuths:
What does the star after Mary Smith's name mean?
RSBM

That's bothered me from day 1. First I thought it was a "test entry" from someone learning the NamUs system. And the date: 1/1/1983 January 1st is usually a default when exact date isn't known but here it just seems like something to fill the space. OTOH, I've often wondered if it's a pseudonym. Like maybe her family doesn't want her real name out there but does want her in the system and publicly viewable so people will look for potential matches.

My not-so wise answer.

I have found a newspaper article of an MP, that went missing from Pittsburgh in 1986, that has striking similarities. She was involved with drugs and I assume the search efforts in her case were not as ambitious as they could have been. There was never any follow-up in the newspapers that I could find.

It would be a 4 hour drive from there but all of it on I-76.

I opened a request with Pittsburgh PD to find out whether there was any resolution in the case.

I will post the article once I know ... I don't want to share any picture / name, before I know they are still missing.

Please remind me if I forget to follow-up in this thread.

If you send me her info, I can check ancestry and whatnot.

Karen Yurconic, "Woman's bones are discovered in Berks field," Morning Call [Allentown, PA], 5 June 1992, B2.
Woman_s_bones_are_discovered_in_Berks_field.webp

The skull, which [Berks County Coroner Bill] Fatora said on initial investigation did not appear to have any wounds, was completely exposed and found about 5 feet from a grave that had just enough dirt covering it that the skeleton could not be readily detected, he said.

The skeleton was clad in black clothing cinched at the waist by a white vinyl belt.

[...]

The skeleton had been there for at least a year, Fatora said. "My guess was at least that length of time because of roots entangled within the body."

[...]

"If it was an accidental death, someone certainly went to a lot of trouble to cover up the accident," Fatora said.
