  • Luis is originally from New York and has been in Pittsburgh for the last five years as a medical student.
  • He's approx 5'6" tall, with shoulder-length black hair, of Mexican descent, with a septum piercing.
  • He speaks to his parents daily, but the last time they could reach him was Saturday.
  • His father drove to Pittsburgh to get answers.
  • He also called LE for a wellness check. When they went to the apartment, the front door was open.
  • All of Luis' cards, cash and car keys are still in his home.
  • Neighbors said his car hadn't been moved in three days.
  • The family called the University of Pittsburgh and learned that he was not in class this week.
  • A search began at South Side Park, where Luis was last seen on camera walking his Doberman Mon morning.
  • 30 minutes, 45 minutes after he's seen on camera, the dog came running out by himself.
  • The dog was found on Sterling St and was picked up by animal control.
  • Luis' sister says the dog was acting like he was trying to get help.
  • The family took the dog back to the park and Luis' sister said, "He just kept crying, and he kept pulling over there, toward that way. He was crying and pulling."

Sister posted on FB he was last spotted on Pius st and S.18th st. I guess that is where the camera caught him? IMO

I am from this area pius street has a ton of homes on it and cars always driving down it. Someone had to have spotted him walking his dog. The intersection is right by a bridge and also has steps that go down to another part of south side and there’s a lot of nooks and crannies to slip into though and be hidden. He may be in one of those spots it would be easy to fall into a part that is hard for people to see him

I feel for this family. I hope he is located safe.

What are the risks for misadventure in this area?

Based on the description of the poor dog's behavior, I think we need to be very concerned about an accident or that he could be a crime victim...

I hope a great and experienced LE team is working this 24/7. Bless them.

I live right near this area and used to run down Pius and Mission Street. There’s a lot of houses but very little foot traffic. I’ve always been curious about that park but heard there’s some drug activity, I never ventured in alone. If the streets are empty, the park would be even more so. It is not in a touristy area whatsoever.

There’s a lot of homeless people on the South Side, but not sure if there are any encampments specifically in that park. Last month there was a stabbing of a runner on a trail on the other side of town by a homeless person.

If he was seen entering the park with his dog, but only his dog came out, duh, he’s in the park. LE needs to get search or cadaver dogs in there ASAP.

Unfortunately, if he had an accident and couldn’t get up, this brutal cold is too much to survive.

Part of me wants to run over there right now and start searching, but not a good idea for a lone woman to do so.

I would have thought foul play but I just can't see someone trying to rob or harm a guy walking a Doberman. The dog's behavior is concerning - something happened to Luis, he just didn't leave IMO. Has anyone seen a middle name for him? I found a public record that could be of interest IF it were him, (basic name, age, residence city is correct) but I'd need a middle name to verify before linking.

@Kittybunny You are a good person.
This is awful. If only we could understand dogs.

The body of Luis Espinoza, who had been missing since Monday, was found Friday around 8:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Sterling Street in the city’s South Side Slopes section.
--------------------------
A police spokesperson said preliminary indications are that Espinoza’s death does not appear suspicious.

that's so sad but I don't understand why he would've left his door open if he was fine after that seen on camera walking his dog

If it was a suicide (as it kind of sounds like, though we cannot rule out an accident just yet), he might have left the door open so that if people start to look for him they'd get access to the flat.

Also maybe for the dog to get back inside if it returned home.
