From a cursory check of NamUs, one potential match stood out to me, Joseph James Kostak (The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)). We have very little information on the John Doe, but Kostak's height matches, gender matches, age matches (40-99 for John Doe, 40 y/o for Kostak at time of disappearance), circumstances match (Kostak went missing in the same year as John Doe (April vs. October 2011), John Doe was a complete skeleton at the time of discovery, although PMI is 1 month estimated. JMO, it's possible that the Doe could have been there longer). There's not many missing persons cases that match the John Doe's case that occurred within the year of 2011 and are still local. The islands in the Susquehanna near Wilkes-Barre (can't speak for other Susquehanna islands as I am farther away from them and have less experience with them) are largely transient/fluctuating as they are quite flat and therefore susceptible to small-large changes in the Susquehanna's height over time. I imagine the rest of the John Doe's remains, including the skull, were carried an unknown distance upstream. Dentals aren't available but DNA is according to Pennsylvania Missing (Pennsylvania Missing Persons and Unidentified Victims).

That's a really good clothes match, even the blue jeans match as well! The location is really far away from where the UID was found, though, and I find it odd how he was last seen 3 years before the UID was found across the state when the UID's PMI was 1 month (could be greater, though). The height doesn't match, but is close enough to be in the realm of possibility. Age also matches. If King made it to Richards Island, its possible that the river could have carried away some of the remaining clothes if they were not found at the scene? There was a bad flood in September of 2011 or so due to Tropical Storm Lee, about a month before the UID was found, which could be the reason for that. Also brings up the theory that the UID could be a victim of the floods.

No longer in NamUs. I believe he was removed in the past 24 hours since I check PA UIDs every day and today there was one less than yesterday.

@GJKJR Coincidentally, I can't find Joseph Kostak in NamUs either.

Hmm, that's very interesting! I don't believe I submitted Joseph Kostak, so maybe they caught onto it or they both had DNA in the system, I'm not sure.

I'm considering emailing the Luzerne County officials handling this case to see whether this UID has been identified. This case got me interested because this is by far the closest case to me (It's probably not even a ~20 minute drive from me right now). Wilkes-Barre is a big city for the area, but in the grand scheme of things it's not *that* large (40,000 people). I hope this UID finally has gotten his name back!

How do you know that John Doe was a complete skeleton at the time of discovery?

How do you know that John Doe was a complete skeleton at the time of discovery?

Only partial skeletal remains were found.

Prior to being removed, the NamUs file said "Head, torso, one or more hands, and one or more limbs not found." (see OP above)

NamUs file prior to NamUs 2.0 said "Recovered lower body from pelvis/sacrum to left foot (right foot & patella not recovered).

From The Times Leader dated 7/28/12

Luzerne County Acting Coroner William Lisman said the pelvis, left leg and foot were found by a fisherman on the northern edge of the island on Oct 8. The skeletal remains were partially buried in sandy and rocky soil, Lisman said.

The upper torso, head, arms, hands and right leg and foot were not recovered.

"There was no skin, no fingerprints, no dental records, nothing," Lisman said.

Ah, complete as in just bones, not complete as in all parts. So much for my reading comprehension skills. Yeah, PMI of one month doesn't seem realistic. I don't know who from the coroner's office entered the case into NamUs in Feb 2012 but I wonder if they meant to put "years" instead of "months" in PMI.

In the same article as above (part 2, different page), the coroner says the remains could've been there for 2 years or washed down from NY. I've attached the pertinent part of the article.

Wow. R.I.P. Mr. Kostak. After 8 years, we know what happened to him.
