Police say an investigation is underway after an infant was stabbed at a home in Coatesville, in Chester County, on Wednesday.

Upon arrival, police said, officers took the child’s father, 44-year-old Michael Phillips, into custody for stabbing his 3-month-old child in the abdomen.

An investigation revealed that after stabbing his child, Phillips then took the infant outside and threw him in the snow.

The child is in serious condition and was flown to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to undergo surgery, according to police.

Beyond horrific. I cannot fathom how the mother/his partner and the other children in the house must feel. Let alone that sweet innocent baby. At 3 months old, they’re just little love sponges thirsty for security and affection. Ugh. Please let them pull through this.

According to a criminal affidavit as reported on Action News at 10 on PHL17, the infant’s mother told investigators Phillips made comments about sacrificing his son before the stabbing. She told her 9-year-old son to run and get help.

After the assault, the mother threw herself on top of the infant in the snow, trying to protect the baby.

Court proceedings scheduled late Wednesday did not move forward as expected. A judge delayed Phillips’ arraignment after observing that he struggled to answer basic questions and asked God for forgiveness during the hearing. He was then transported to Chester County Prison.

An affidavit cited in the report describes officers encountering Phillips arguing at the apartment while another officer ran toward an ambulance carrying the baby wrapped in a blanket. The affidavit states there was blood on Phillips’ shirt, and body camera footage later captured him saying, “I did it God I did it.”

How heart wrenching to know the mother was forced to show the ultimate act of devotion and love by throwing herself on her child to protect them but what a blessing that she’s ok. "As you are probably aware, my family has experienced a horrific nightmare. Please know that I am fully cooperating with detectives and medical professionals.

Briggs is incredibly strong and an amazing little boy. He is a fighter. While he is the obvious victim, he is not the only victim. Our family is devastated by the events that occurred. Up until this event, Mike has been an amazing dad, husband, and human being. His actions were not consistent with any part of the man that the boys and I know and love dearly. While I fully understand the need to demonize him based on the information made public, it is not helpful. My heart aches—for my youngest son, who is fighting for his life; for my middle son, who experienced these events alongside me; for my oldest son, whose world was turned upside down; and for my husband, who will eventually be lucid and realize what he did to the son he loved so, so deeply.

While I understand the outpouring of public rage and the community’s need to know, comments about Mike and his character have only added to the pain our family is experiencing. I am thankful, for everyone else’s sake, that they do not know the full details of what happened. I wish more than anything that I could forget them myself. With that in mind, please be mindful of the comments you make and the information you choose to believe.

What Mike did was horrific and inexcusable, but right now my focus is on helping my beautiful baby boy get healthy. I do not think I will ever comprehend what caused this horrific departure from the man my boys and I know Mike to be, but I am hopeful that people will allow us to heal without the burden of their opinions about his character while the criminal and medical investigations are ongoing.

A double tragedy as she has now lost her husband and the boys their father, not to mention the trauma. I'm so grateful the baby has survived. A regular knife vs. a tiny baby's abdomen could so easily have been fatal.
