Gunman identified by police:

PITTSBURGH—Police on Friday identified a gunman who killed one person and shot several others at a University of Pittsburgh psychiatric clinic before being shot dead himself as a 30-year-old local man.
They said John Shick was armed with two handguns traced to Texas, one of which had been reported stolen.

Police still don't have a motive for Thursday's shooting by Shick, who's believed to have lived in Pittsburgh's Shadyside neighborhood near the hospital.

gunman was a patient, very disturbed, treatment cut off.
Neighbors saw bizarre notes about 'cleaning up vomit, have pancreitis, sorry'
and he had vomitted in the lobby of apartment building nce and had to go by ambulance to hospital.
No one was surprised at all.
I'm watching WPXI
4 remaining in hospital
the receptionist (Ms. Light) is still in and out of conscience
Everyone went back to work through the same lobby today.

IMO metal detectors should be installed asap!

Shick enrolled in Duquesne's graduate program in the Department of Biological Sciences, began taking classes in August and supervised two freshman labs a week until late October, said school spokeswoman Bridget Fare.

In mid-September, a member of Duquesne's faculty claimed Shick had acted disrespectfully. In early October, female graduate students complained to administrators about persistent text messages and emails from Shick in which he repeatedly asked them out on dates or to study together, Fare said. Even after they told him no, he continued asking them out

At a student conduct hearing on Nov. 3, Shick acknowledged the messages. The school banned him from Duquesne property and forbade him from contacting female graduate students in the biological sciences program for four years, Fare said.

Shick graduated in 2004 from a dual-degree, five-year program at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. and Columbia University in New York. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Carleton and an engineering degree from Columbia, said Carleton spokesman Eric Sieger. He attended Carleton from 1999 to 2002, and Columbia from 2002 to 2004.

Women complained about overtures; Duquesne imposed limits

'He walked like a zombie'

Shick frequently walked alone along Centre Avenue, people in the neighborhood said. Sometimes he would wander into D&L Convenience, but he rarely bought anything, said employee Lisa Williams, 26. He talked to himself but not to her, she said.

To others, like Issam Talbi, 32, he "seemed like he was drunk or on medication."

"He walked like a zombie," said Talbi, an employee at the Subway store on Centre Avenue, just a few blocks from his apartment, where

Shick ordered spicy Italian sandwiches.

When he died, Shick had two fanny packs containing pills, two semiautomatic handguns and two watches.

Pittsburgh police said they have not been able to contact Shick's parents, Susan and Larry Shick, who are believed to be on a yacht in the Bahamas. Police notified the Coast Guard, which is assisting in attempts to locate them. Their website shows they most recently docked their boat in the Bahamas. The Tribune-Review could not reach them by email or phone.

Another place I think it a ticking time bomb is our VA hospitals.
So many of our military has PTSD and depression.
Yet, no metal detectors.
Most of the veterans are still fighting past wars.
and the anger to the government is unbelieveable.
Believe me I'm there allot with my husband and I know.
All mental health and ospitals should have metal detectors to protect
everyone.

parents notified

The Coast Guard helped investigators locate Susan and Larry Shick, who were on a yacht in the Bahamas. It hasn`t been determined who will collect the remains of their son, John Shick, 30, said Allegheny County Medical Examiner Dr. Karl E. Williams. Funeral arrangements have not been made, Williams said

This is horribly tragic for the young doctor's family. First their daughter was murdered in a domestic violence incident, then their one remaining child, their son, was murdered just after he proposed to his g/f.

I pray they have the strength to carry on. My sincere condolence to his fiance as well.

Senseless.

http://www.wpxi.com/news/news/local/western-psych-mobile-unit-sent-shooters-apartment-/nLTDP/

Mother had asked mobile unt to go to shooters apartment 3 times............
come on why wasn't he hospitalized?
This man definately had so many problems.
He needed help so badly!

Whether he had problems or not isn't really the issue when discussing hospitalization. It's whether the people evaluating the situation determine if he is a danger to himself or others at that time.

He does have rights as long as he isn't declared incompetent, so if he's not an immediate danger and he refuses a formal evaluation, it's his right to do so.

Sometimes, whether it's a mentally ill person or even a parent you suspect is unable to take care of him/herself, if the person refuses any help you have to wait for the inevitable train wreck to occur before that person is forced to get help.

Unfortunately, in this case the "train wreck" involved the death and injury of innocent people and the suicide of the person in question.
