Muhammad Ilyas Bin Ghazali is from Malaysia but has been living in an apartment in Middletown while attending school at Penn State Harrisburg. His mother hasn't had phone contact with him since July 26. One of his roommates said he saw him on the morning of July 26 in their apartment. Police believe Muhammad left Pennsylvania and maybe in Minnesota.

Cottage Grove woman shares Minnesota with Malaysia

Just searching the internet for possible connections, found this interesting article, dated 12/15/2017, about an American exchange student to Malaysia! Not sure anything about it would actually be related to Muhammad, but you never know....

For Julia Reimann, the trip home to Cottage Grove for Thanksgiving involved a bit more than a short jaunt over the river and through the woods.

Reimann, 23 spent 11 months in southeast Asia on the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, where she taught English to middle school and high school students.......

Now there’s a community of Malaysians … of probably 500 students, who the only place in the United States they want to come is Minnesota,” she said.

So Penn State has a Malaysian Students Club...

I wonder if anyone in the investigation reached out to them to see if Muhammad was acquainted with any of these students. According to some info I found on the site the club seems to be the official way the exchange students become integrated into the student body. So, I would think Muhammad undoubtedly at least had acquaintances with some of these folks.

And the state of Minnesota has a Malaysian association, but it doesn't seem very active

And of course the universities have associations and clubs
