It sounded like she put her to bed, woke up and she was gone. If the mother shared complicity in this they should both be hung out to dry.

I was trying to find a website that would tell me the symptoms and description of death due to hypothermia and found a blog about this case:

http://missingandmurderedchildren.facesofthemissing.org/

By the way, I did find what I was looking for, and her death wasn't an easy one.

I don't even know what to say anymore. It's just heartbreaking to think that there are people out there that do this to such an innocent. It's sickening. She didn't even have a chance. :(

I had always thought that freezing to death was a relatively "easy" way to perish (like falling asleep) until a friend of mine and her mother froze to death while hiking in Utah and losing the trail. Then I researched it. And you are right - it is a terribly painful way to die.

I agree 1million percent! He needs to be tied to a tree in sub zero weather and let him see how it FEELS!

I live about in Western Pa so I know how damned cold the weather has been. My father in law said the father needs to be hung out side by his balls!

One time I walked about 6 city blocks in a light (evening) jacket because we couldn't find parking. The weather was the way it is now in Minnesota - for example, today it was 12 below. Monday it was 24 below. And that's not wind chill - that's just the temp. Anyway, when we got into the restaurant I was so nauseous and I was uncontrollably shaking - I had to run to the john to throw up and I didn't even make it. I have been a midwestern girl all my life and never realized how cold can affect you physically - when it's cold enough. It was almost like I was going into shock.

I cannot imagine what that poor child went through. Sorry about your friend and her Mom, South.

I have been following this one since I got the Amber Alert last weekend. It has haunted me today to read the details of this angel's death.

When I read that they found tiny footprints in the snow, I got choked up. I think the dad thought she was dead and tried to hide her body.

Thank you, Eve. They died doing what they loved, but it was sad.

Cold is powerful - as your experience shows. It doesn't take long to overtake you.

Bless this little girl's heart. I hope she's warm as a bug in a rug right now.

I have also been haunted by this story all day. I currently reside in the Augusta Georiga area, where we had temperatures in the upper 50's or low 60's today. I have lived in Michigan for a while, however, and know from first hand experience what REAL cold is like. I am Southern born, and hopefully, will die in the warm sultry Southern air. I decided when I lived in Michigan that Hell was cold, not hot. I can't take it. I have alternated all day between sadness and extreme anger over this case. I totally went off in a meeting at work today because I just needed to rip someone a new one. I cannot even begin to imagine how I would handle this situation if I were the Mother....or maybe I can, but I can't repeat my thoughts in public. I only pray that little Niya is like the little girl in the story "The Little Match Girl", and that an angel took her into a warm happy place. Oh God, why, why, why.......

"Police said Page told them he took the girl outside wrapped in a blanket and left her, still breathing, beside railroad tracks near a bridge."

He knew she was still alive, my god...
I thought he probably thought he killed her and tried to hide her. It makes this horrible story even worse, he knew she was out there and wandering in the cold. How could he sleep at night???

UPDATE!
Another child in the house that night says that the father came into her bedroom, covered her mouth and touched her genitals. Then he left the room with little Nyia in tow.

I think I am going to be sick. That poor baby....

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/02/08/toddler.death.ap/index.html
the update is at the bottom of the page. No details about the other child.

Edited to add: The reports do not specify the gender of the other child. I am assuming it a a girl, but could certainly be mistaken.

This pedo perp disgusts me beyond words. I am generally not for the death penalty; but, in this case I prefer it. This sorry excuse for a sub-human should never be free again, and I'll be damned if my tax dollars go to feed, house, and medicate that hunk of compost for any longer than absolutely necessary.

That poor little baby never even had a chance. I feel for the other children in the home, too. I am praying for the other little ones that they may have a stable, loving family to care for them.

--This has happened before unfortunately--An Amish man,who was gay, married an Amish woman, and they had a baby boy---He soon murdered his wife and then took his babyboy and left him in the middle of nowhere in the wintertime to die--the baby boy did not survive--The Amish man is in prison--This happened about 15 years ago

Police Say Dad Knocked Child Unconscious

POSTED: 5:54 pm PST February 8, 2007

PITTSBURGH -- A man angry his toddler daughter wouldn't go to bed knocked her unconscious and left her to die outside in single-digit temperatures, police said.

The frozen body of Nyia Miangel Page, who was about to turn 2, was found Sunday at an abandoned playground about a 10-minute walk from the family's home. Tiny footprints in the snow suggest she had gotten up and wandered around before she died, police said.

Her father, William Lorenzo Page, 23, of Braddock, was arrested Wednesday on charges of criminal homicide, kidnapping, false reports and simple assault. He has been in custody since Sunday, when he was charged with sexually abusing another child shortly before Nyia died. Page told police he woke up early Saturday and found the girl awake and playing near a mirror in the hallway, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday night. He said he got mad when the girl wouldn't go back to bed so he hit her so hard she hit her head and was unconscious, the complaint said.

Police said Page told them he took the girl outside wrapped in a blanket and left her, still breathing, beside railroad tracks near a bridge.

Police said a T-shirt, a pair of women's underwear and a Pittsburgh Steelers "Terrible Towel," all found in Page's basement, appeared to have been stained with dried blood.

An autopsy determined Nyia died of hypothermia, but the Allegheny County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide because investigators said it was unreasonable to assume the child had made it alone to the playground, which is on a wooded knoll. The toddler would have had to have climbed 17 snowy steps to get there.

Authorities could only guess how long Nyia, wearing only a sweater and a diaper, could have survived in temperatures that hovered around 2 degrees Saturday morning. more at link:http://www.ktvu.com/news/10967060/detail.html

Why didn't this idiot go and wake the baby's mom and ask her to deal with the child? Poor baby, as bad as it sounds we can only hope she never regained consciousness before freezing to death.

I would guess he didn't wake the mother because he didn't want her to find out about his molestation of another child that night.

Frozen toddler's father also faces sex charge

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/02/08/toddler.death.ap/index.html

The sexual abuse charge against Page came as police investigated Nyia's disappearance.

Police said another child in the house told investigators that sometime overnight Friday, Page entered a bedroom, covered the child's mouth with one hand and touched the child's genitals with the other. The child said Page then left the room, followed by Nyia, police said.

That poor beautiful little girl. She is just a doll with her big grin. How could her dad do that to her? Did he know that she was alive when he took her out there or did he think he had killed her? I can't stand the thought of that baby toddling around in the freezing cold not knowing where she was. What a horrible way to die. This man should get the death penalty and not a quick one either. I wonder what the mother thinks now? Did she know what kind of a man she was with? I wonder when he raped that little boy? If it was recently he would still have been in prison wouldn't he? Maybe it was before this mom knew him and no one ever told her. But he would have to register and everyone in their neighborhood would have been notified where ever they moved to so she must have known. I don't understand why anyone would want to be married to a child rapist. And then have children with him.

I take it that was his mother that was living there with her boyfriend too? I wonder if she believes her son did this horrible thing? I guess if a man is capable of raping a little child he is capable of anything. I sure as heck wouldn't have been living in the same house as my son if he raped a little boy.
I wouldn't ever be able to come up with an excuse good enough for what he did to ever let him back into my life. I hate perverts. Hang them by their privates in the town square and let the community stone them to death.
