I can't believe he was able to slash/ stab 21 people.

Where were the adults? Nobody could subdue him? He's not a big kid.

A little off topic but there was an incident at the local high school here in my town yesterday. Several shots were fired in front of the school, the school went on lock down. The police still haven't found the suspects, no one was injured but 5 shell casings were found. My daughter goes to ghe middle school a few miles away, they went on modified lock down yesterday. Parents were never notified and still haven't been! The news this morning said that all of our counties schools would have extra police presence today in light of what happened yesterday but do you think there was anything different this morning when I dropped her off??NO!!!! When are ALL schools going to take this stuff seriously??? The mindset of "this won't happen here" nedds to stop! It can happen anywhere!

Terrifying. I might be missing something, but why is the fire alarm pulling being seen as advantageous in that situation? I would assume swarmed hallways make for easier victims. Seems hard to break into a locked classroom with a knife.

I am thinking since it's stated it started right after 7am perhaps class was not in session yet?

I would think the alarm was pulled to get all the students outside, which it did. It is possible these were instructions from the school in case of an emergency. If not, it was great thinking on the part of the student who pulled the alarm. jmo

The school doesn't have metal detectors. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett said because of what it would "say about our community."

The entire incident lasted 5 minutes. The quick response was partly due to the fact that the attack occurred during the changeover of security, when officers from both the overnight and the day shifts were on the campus.

Investigators were checking reports of a threatening phone call between Hribal and another student the night before. He didn’t say whether the suspect received or made the call.

Some are saying that pulling the alarm wasn't the best thing to do, because it only brought more students into the hallways and created chaos and panic, as well as put those students in harms way.

The attacker "had the same expression on his face that he has every day, which was the freakiest part," Moore said. "He wasn't saying anything. He didn't have any anger on his face. It was just a blank expression."

As for what set off the attack, Murrysville Police Chief Thomas Seefeld said investigators were looking into reports of a threatening phone call between the suspect and another student the night before. Seefeld didn't specify whether the suspect received or made the call.

The boy had a "blank look," she said. "He was just kind of looking like he always does, not smiling, not scowling or frowning."

Someone, possibly a student, pulled a fire alarm during the attack, Seefeld said. Although that created chaos, the police chief said, it emptied out the school more quickly, and "that was a good thing that that was done."

They are crammed in those hallways opening lockers, chatting with friends, etc. Pulling the alarm got them out of the hallways and into the sunlight where they have more escape options, and the ability to see better.

Classmates at Franklin Regional Senior High School said Hribal didn't seem like the type to turn violent. He had friends, he got good grades and he wasn't bullied, they said. No inflammatory or troubling social media posts surfaced in the hours after the attack — investigators said that as far as they knew, he didn't have a cellphone.

But at Hribal's arraignment Wednesday, prosecutors hinted that he might have mental problems, saying he indicated at the scene of the stabbings that he "wanted to die" and telling the judge that he might not be competent to stand trial.

The 16-year-old student accused of going on a stabbing rampage today at a Pennsylvania high school "wasn't a real well-liked kid" and had previously made death threats, the brother of a witness told ABCNews.com.

He was denied bail.

A student who plays hockey with Hribal told ABC News that the teen was quiet but a “pretty normal kid.”

Hribal had a preliminary hearing set for April 30.

Plus classrooms are traps because in most cases there is only one way out. Sounding an alarm would alert students to the fact there is something wrong going on regardless of where they were. Teachers in classrooms could shut their doors until they were alerted by the office. There really is no best laid plans when you are in the direct area of the person with a weapon. A gun makes noise, which would have sent the students running outside. A knife makes no noise so it is clear he was able to stab a lot of students before he was brought down. jmo

Hribal is being described in his neighborhood as a shy boy.

“We’ve know them since we moved in. It’s… it’s tragic,” said Terri Ledonne, another neighbor.

The high school will be closed for the next few days. The motive remains under investigation.
