One student in critical condition at UPMC was scheduled to undergo additional surgery Friday. The boy was pierced in the liver, close to his heart, a doctor said.

At Forbes Regional Hospital, three boys, ages 15, 16 and 16, were listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Listed in fair condition were two boys at Forbes and two boys at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

I can't imagine him not being self conscious. If he were mine I would assume he was and taken steps, like an endocrinologist and a dermatologist would be in my short list.

Yesterday my husband had chemo at Hillman's and everyone had the news on and was talking about the injuries. Nurses explained a few things to us. Today I had to take my mom to UPMC specialist and low and behold the docs had a special conference and so many experts were there including mom's doc and his PA. The PA happened to see the critically ill student and this doc was a consult........small world and now I feel worse because her first opinion was he wasn't going to make it. Thank goodness he is young and a fighter........praying he can over come all injuries and memories and pain!

I'm so sorry you're husband needs chemo! Tell him I said to kick its a$$!

Wow, that's unusual that medical professionals were discussing a patient's condition like that. They're not supposed to do that. But I guess that gets forgotten in cases like this.

Prayers for all these young people. What a horrible thing to have happen.

My step-niece is the lovely age of 13 right now and going through some very bad bullying. She's lashing out in response. She won't seek companionship with other girls because they must all be "b*tchy cheerleaders." She disagrees that they're just as insecure as she is. We all got together to think of advice for her, and what she found to be most effective was accusing her tormentors of trying too hard and caring too much. Ice cold accusation, apparently. (Not to victim blame those who don't confront bullies, or unsuccessfully confront bullies)

RSBM...THIS is what worries me so much for teens these days. I'm so glad mine are older and past this. I do have a 15 year old son who stays completely out of the social media scene. But it's really nasty with girls. They can be so ruthless and the stuff they post can be so awful. It's so sad to me One of my sons went through a big legal mess and the postings online had ME going crazy and I went to the prosecution to get that crap removed. I couldn't help myself to look. And the more I googled his name the more I saw stuff. It was heartbreaking to me. It makes an adult feel like kicking some azz! But of course you can't touch a sole....throwing a coke on someone is likely assault.

We asked about the HIPPA law and there is a fine line there. That os why they can talk about it as well as the news. Somehow this is not a medical 'condition'...........but a public news.............the docs PA saw a 'blue/grey male' and really didn't think he would make it to OR............must be the poor boy still getting surgeries and the first victim???

in our elementary school many years ago there was a very bad bully at the school. His father is a big politician. Rumor was he was bullied at home and came to school and bullied others. At 4th grade he was kicked out of school and attends some where else............now he would be about 16 and I still wonder about him and yes, father is still in politics...................

IMO, parents are sometimes part of the problem. In our area, a local teen has received absolutely no jail time for killing 4 people when he was driving drunk. His attorney used the 'Affluenza Defense'. In other words, the kid had affluent parents who always took care of his problems for him.

And poor thing herself, getting harassed and assaulted like that. Sounds like a not very healthy atmosphere at this school, at least for some kids.

You know, people are only human. If they are tormented day after day, in school and out (and I don't know that's what happened, just positing a hypothetical situation) they will eventually break. Something has to be the final straw, even if its something like "rat face" that an adult would scoff at.

Not everyone is equal psychologically and environmentally.

I certainly hope all the bullies are detained and how do they feel now that they made someone snap and hurt all these students. There should be punishments for the bullies as well. IMO, there is something bad happening in some schools and it seems to be ignored. I wonder if any of the bullies were hurt or were they all innocent bystanders. In no way am I condoning any actions of the perp............just curious.

A screen shot of the posting by another student that called Alex Hribal, 16, a “rat face” was turned over to police on the same day he slashed and stabbed 20 students and a guard in the school.

Timothy Graham said he is concerned about the issue because school officials ignored his pleas to intervene in bullying that targeted his daughter and escalated into her being attacked in the cafeteria.

“What upset me the most was that officials are saying we're not aware of a bullying problem in school. They're saying we have a great anti-bullying procedure in school ... (but) it's vague at best,” Graham said.

In the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Safe Schools report for 2012-2013, Westmoreland County schools reported a total of 26 incidents of bullying. Franklin Regional reported zero, according to the report.

I don't think any amount of bullying makes random violence acceptable or even more understandable. Of course, I think bullies should be punished. But hurting so many people stands alone IMO. It is unimaginable regardless of what happened to someone or how they were treated.

(I don't take this as self defense like many of the other personal bullying stories upthread. He hurt people he didn't even know. And hurt them seriously).

First, I was appalled that the girl and her father used the horrific and deadly stabbing attack as a soapbox for her situation. And because of their complete lack of consideration of the actual victims in this case, I take her story with a very large grain of salt.

Second, physical assault is illegal. If a parent is not happy with the school's discipline after their child has been attacked, they should call the cops. At least that's the case in my area, not sure if that varies around the country.

Lastly, the assailant was not physically attacked. If anything, someone teased him on Facebook. Solution? Unfriend the person who is annoying you. Taking a knife to school and attacking innocent people is not about the school not doing enough for "fragile" child egos. It's about a young person who is vicious and homicidal. JMO, OMO, MOO.
