Three people are dead and a fourth person was wounded following a quadruple shooting in the city's Lawncrest neighborhood on Friday.

Officials from the School District of Philadelphia confirmed at least two of the deceased victims are Philadelphia students.

One victim is an eighth grader and another is an 11th grader from The Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School Inc., officials say.

There is no word yet on any of the victims' identities.

"My heart is very heavy because of the number of children we have lost. The number keeps climbing. It's a crisis in the city and we must stop it," said Veronica J. Joyner, the founder and chief administrative officer at The Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School Inc.

The shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. on the 5900 block of Palmetto Street.

When officers arrived, they found one victim on the sidewalk, one victim on the porch, and another inside a residence.

Police say the victims, all between the ages of 15 to 20, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A fourth victim, identified by police as a 16-year-old, was taken to an area hospital in a private vehicle. The teen was placed in stable condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Police say the teen was transported to the hospital by two people who are now in custody for questioning. A gun was also recovered in the vehicle.

Victims IDed:
Around 3:30 p.m., police responded to reports of gunshots on the 5900 block of Palmetto Street near Rising Sun Avenue. Upon arriving at the scene, they found three people who had been fatally shot: Malik Ballard, 17, of Castor Avenue, Khalif Frezghi, 18, of East Pleasant Street, and Salah Fleming, 14, of West Montgomery Avenue. Police say they discovered their bodies inside the doorway of the house, on the porch, and on the sidewalk.

ETA: Castor Ave. is one of the major streets in the Northeast, whereas Pleasant St. is in East Mount Airy in NW Philadelphia, and W. Montgomery Ave. is in both North Philadelphia, and, due to a quirk of geography, also in West Philly.

Investigators believe there was a gun deal or gun swap inside the home prior to the shooting.

"They go into a house on that block for some sort of transaction," Philadelphia Police Staff Inspector Ernest Ransom said. "At some point during their meeting, gunfire erupted, resulted in four shooting victims. Three succumbed to their injuries."

A short time later, police found a black Ford Edge they believe was involved in the shooting on the 500 block of East Wyoming Street. Two teen boys were then arrested and charged with violation of the uniform firearms act and other related offenses in connection to the shooting.

"The gun violence with the juveniles is out of control, that goes without saying," Inspector Ransom said. "We believe the parents need to be more involved in this to make it happen."

On Monday, Philadelphia Police announced they identified two additional persons of interest in the shooting, 15-year-old Taj Lennon and 22-year-old Tyree Lennon. Investigators believe the two are cousins and said they have outstanding warrants. They are both considered armed and dangerous. If you have any information on their whereabouts or the incident, please call the Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334 or 911.
