Investigators searching for a missing woman presumed murdered believe they found blood in the trunk of a car previously parked in the driveway of the fire-ravaged home. Sister Angela Miller, I.H.M., remained a missing person, but the city’s Police Department is investigating her disappearance as a suspected homicide. Forensic tests will be done to confirm the substance police found is blood.

Police say Alan Smith, 49, shot and killed his mother, Rosemary Smith, 72, before setting the double-block home at 2114-2116 Washburn St. ablaze Saturday as police attempted to serve an emergency protection-from-abuse order. Rosemary Smith died from a gunshot wound to the head, and officials ruled her death a homicide. Alan Smith died as a result of smoke inhalation and burns; his death was ruled a suicide.

Miller is Rosemary Smith’s sister. She lived on one side of the home; Rosemary Smith and Alan Smith lived on the other side.

Search for a missing nun picks up pace

SCRANTON — The search for a missing nun picked up pace this morning after cellphone data led police and a cadaver dog to a block away from the rubble of her burnt out home on Washburn Street.

Police said the nun’s nephew, Alan Smith, killed his mother, Rosemary Smith, 72, with a shotgun, and then set the 2114-2116 Washburn St. home on fire, killing himself. Sister Angela Miller, I.H.M., who also resided in the home, is missing. Officials said they believe Miller was killed and moved elsewhere.

Scranton police have been examining cellphone records, trying to trace the path of Alan Smith hours before Saturday’s fire.

Miller and Rosemary Smith, who are sisters and own the home with their two other sisters, received emergency protection from abuse orders against Smith last Friday night because he threatened to harm them and they feared for their safety.

Officers tried to serve the PFA on Saturday morning and came upon Smith at the home. He shot at police three times as he set the West Scranton house on fire.

Investigators believe Sister Angela was killed last week by her nephew before he set their house on fire during a standoff.

Investigators say they're now following cell phone data to help find her and the search is focused on the same neighborhood, about a five or ten block radius from where the family was living.

In a very systematic search, police officers walked in a straight line down the railroad tracks near Jackson Street in West Scranton Friday morning.

Investigators are looking for any clues about the whereabouts of Sister Angela Miller.

If I understand correctly, the crime happened in West Scranton, which is a good 2 hour drive north of the Germantown section of Philadelphia where Awbury Arboretum is located.

Details of Disappearance​

Angela was last seen in Scranton, Pennsylvania on April 27, 2018. She lived in a duplex in the 2100 block of Washburn Street, and her sister, Rosemary Smith, and Rosemary's son, Alan Smith, lived in the other half of it. A photo of Alan is posted with this case summary.

The night before Angela's disappearance, she and her sister asked for emergency PFA (protection from abuse) orders against Alan. Rosemary said he had threatened to kill her, her family and the neighbors. Angela said her nephew had "deep anger issues with psychotic episodes" and described him as a "sociopath."

Alan is a suspect in a 2005 homicide, but was never charged in that case for lack of evidence. In 2006, he was arrested on child charges and ultimately served a ten-year prison term. A previous girlfriend had sought a PFA against him for herself and her two children, saying he had threatened her.

The women were last heard from at 9:30 a.m. on April 27. At 8:00 a.m. the next day when police arrived at the house to serve the PFA orders to Alan, he exchanged gunshots with the police and set multiple fires all over the house. When the police were able to gain entry to the residence, they found the bodies of Rosemary and Alan inside, and blood inside the trunk of Rosemary's dark blue 2015 Subaru Crosstrek, which had been parked in the driveway.

Investigators believe Alan killed Angela inside the house as well, but an exhaustive search of the burned-out home, lasting four days, turned up no sign of her or her body. The house was demolished after police determined Angela wasn't in it. They think Alan killed his aunt and dumped the body using Rosemary's car, then came back to the house and killed Rosemary before the police arrived at the scene. He subsequently died of smoke inhalation and burns.

Angela is still considered a missing person, but foul play is strongly suspected in her case. She is a nun with the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
