Tammy Berkey

Tammy Berkey, of Berlin, had left her home in a red transam that Wednesday and had not been heard from since, according to her family.

She was first reported missing on August 7, according to social media posts by her family

They said last Thursday that investigators were called to a home in Brothersvalley Township for a welfare check on Berkey.

At the home, troopers spoke with her brother, James Foy Jr., who lives at the house with Berkey. As police were searching the home, Foy went into another room and shot himself. He later died.

Police checked her house on Mason Dixon Highway and began searching the property for any sign of Berkey.

During their investigation, they found her brother, James Foy Jr., shot dead in a room inside the home.

Well if that doesn't scream guilt I don't know what else would.

Police say while troopers were searching the residence, Foy allegedly went into another room of the home where he reportedly committed suicide.

Troopers say life-saving measures were attempted but that Foy succumbed to his injuries, which were the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators say police continued to search the residence over the weekend but Berkey's whereabouts are still unknown.

Anyone with information is asked to contact state police in Somerset at 814-445-4104.

Authorities confirmed that the Mercyhurst University forensic anthropology team was called to the residence on Sunday.

Authorities also noted that, "at this time, we do not have any reason to believe there is any immediate threat and or danger to the public due to this unfortunate tragedy."

DNA evidence confirmed that remains discovered on a Brothersvalley Township property were those of Tammy Berkey, who was reported missing in early August, Acting District Attorney Molly Metzgar said.

Metzgar said that Berkey's remains were found outside her home – and that the case has now evolved into a criminal investigation.

But it's too soon to speculate on how, when and where she died and how her body ended up where it did, Metzgar said.

"Right now, we're working to get answers to all of those questions," she said.
