Missing man's family offers $5,000 reward for his return

The family of missing 25-year old Thomas Hughes have announced a $5,000 reward for his return.

Jeanene Hughes, the mother of the missing man, held a press conference near the SouthSide Riverfront Trail on Saturday afternoon to make the announcement.

Snipped from above link, BBM:

Though Mr. Hughes has always “had demons,” this is “very abnormal behavior,” Mrs. Hughes said.

“Right now we aren’t ruling anything out,” she added in reference to any suspected foul play. “We don’t know if he took off, and he’s on a mission to find himself. I know one of the last people he spoke to, he did make it known that he loves his girlfriend Regan, and he loves her kids.”

Bad feeling here too :(

His mother looks to be in so much pain in the photo that accompanied the article. Heartbreaking. I sure hope he comes home safely.

FYI, the current online version of the PG article does not include the full quote above. I wonder why it was edited/removed.

Oh, you're right! Good eye! I wonder why that part was removed??

Also from this link “Police were able to ping his cellphone about 4 a.m. Jan. 24 near the Mon Wharf, about the time his family reported him missing.”

That area is two miles away and on the opposite side of the river.

I can't come up with any good reasons why you would park your car and leave the keys in it, unlocked, and walk 2 miles to the river. You wouldn't leave your car like that unless you were going to stay close by, or something happened suddenly.

Are there closer parking areas to the wharf? Closer than 2 miles away? Surely there are. So it is curious that his car was parked where it was, unless maybe that spot made it easier to be found.

Wasn't Paul missing from really close by that area, too? And Dakota went missing from close by, too? That's the only thing that makes me suspicious of this not being a suicide, but I suppose it's always a possibility theirs were suicides, too?

This was just posted a few days ago:

Four years later, family still seeking answers to what happened to Dakota James

“My wish tonight is to pray that Thomas Hughes is found safe and comes home to his family. I pray for all those that have become part of a story that we never wanted to be apart of,” Pamela James’ post read. (Dakota's mom)

I hate these kind of mysteries.

We do not know what time the vehicle was left at the location where it was located. The parking could have occurred after the last ping from the phone.

My interpretation was that the phone was either turned off after the ping, the battery died, and/or he discarded it before proceeding to where the vehicle was found.

Or, as you said, he could have parked and walked there.

Cause the PG sucks.

There’s more video of the interview, he was seen on security cameras and at one point was even back near his sister’s house. The cameras don’t show clearly whether or not he’s alone in the van.

Yes, I was thinking about the mention of him heading back in the direction of the house and then, for some reason, driving back away. It sounds to me like an indication that he did not have a particular destination in mind when leaving the house. It appears he was just trying to 'get away', so to speak.

Pittsburgh police released video of Thomas Hughes at a gas station the last night he was seen. (PITTSBURGH POLICE)

Why is the location of the gas station undisclosed? He’s missing, why not state where he was seen?

Pittsburgh Police
@PghPolice

SVU detectives are releasing this video of a missing male, Thomas Hughes. It was recorded at a gas station the night Mr. Hughes was last seen. If anyone encountered him at or near this undisclosed location late January 23 or early January 24 please call SVU at (412) 323-7141.

I spent some time on Carson Street. A rather lively place pre-covid, to say the least. Think PITT, huge University town, hot summer nights, beer on tap.

This is a big boy. He's big enough to leave a mark if somebody tried to wrestle him down. He looks pretty wound up entering that gas station convenience store.

Hard to say what went on here. Could be kidnapping, could be murder, could be a runaway, maybe suicide.

Crazy the number of people that turn up missing, GONE. Scary stuff.

Wish they would show the whole video of him in the store. He definitely looks pumped up walking in.

I would like to see it all too. He’s a man on a mission. He looks at the ATM but that’s not what he needed apparently, as he appears to walk past it. I see an ExxonMobil rug on the floor - probably a 7-11 convenience store. The gas pump is located at a horizontal directly across from the door. It looks like the Brookline Blvd 7-11, which I visit on occasion. They did say that he had driven back close to his sister’s house at some point, so Brookline would make sense.

No mask on, which is a County rule, so that makes me think he didn’t bring it with him at all, or he was in a hurry coming into the store and left it in the car. Come to think of it, that may be what he went in to buy - a mask. You can’t go too many places without one. Of course, even bars were closing at 12 (at least legally). There are after-hours clubs open later.

I would be curious to know the time, location, was his van parked in the gas station lot, and what items (if any) did he purchase.

Where are you, Tom?
