I'd like to hear your thoughts on whether this could be David Cruz, missing from Allentown since October 31, 1980.

David Cruz
NamUs MP #7208

<mod edit: added updated link>
  • Age (29) is within the 25-40 year range
  • Height (69 inches) is within 1 inch of estimated 70 inches
  • Weight (160 pounds) is within 15 pounds of the estimated 175 pounds
  • Hair color (brown) matches
  • Distance is roughly 250 miles (3.5-4 hours)
  • Timing is consistent, but not particularly strong, as Cruz disappeared 6 years before the UP was found and 6 years before the UP's probable year of death
  • As far as comparing the photos goes, I am not particularly good with this, but I thought I noticed a lot of similarities between the facial structures of Cruz and the facial reconstruction of UP - particularly in the nose, chin, ears, brow bones, and jawline

DNA is now available! That's one encouraging step forward and hopefully suggests someone took a fresh look at his case.

I was curious if I could find any old news articles, and was able to find a more precise location for where the remains here found.

Word of the mysterious death surfaced around noon Friday after a mine inspector of the state Department of Environmental Resources discovered the body along an access road to an abandoned mine south of Brockway near Falls Creek in Washington Township, according to the preliminary police statement. Khngensmith said the site is about 1,000 feet south of Beach Tree Cemetery.

Perhaps the abovementioned potential match didn't work out.
This poor guy, he had electrical wire around his neck?

Just throwing this out there but what about Brian Montel missing from CA in March 1986 (and admittedly no sign he may have travelled to PA). But both the remains and Mr Montel were sans their right hand. Mr Montel's record says he had black hair but looking at the photos it could also be classified as dark brown I think www.doenetwork.org/cases/613dmca.html

Or Melvin Snyder missing from Franklin Co, PA (130 mi) away one year earlier. His neighbour was found guilty of his murder but no body was ever found earlier. However his hair was a more red-auburn. www.doenetwork.org/cases/4332dmpa.html

"Homicide ruled in Jeff death," Indiana Gazette, 21 August 1986, pg. 9.
<modsnip: removed screenshot of article>
A man whose skeleton was discovered near Lanes Mills last month died by strangulation and had suffered a skull fracture, Jefferson County Coroner Chris Burkett said Wednesday.

[...]

Death had occurred about two months before the body was found, Burkett said.

[...]

A 36-inch electrical cord was found near the body, the coroner's report said. All clothing and personal effects had been removed, and it appeared that an attempt was made to burn clothing and a blanket near the body.
