Child's name withheld (7 yr old) Sydney, Australia, May 2013
Kayla James falsely told authorities that her seven-year-old son died after he had fallen off a pogo stick has pleaded guilty to his manslaughter, in one of the worst child abuse cases recorded in Australia.
In the months leading up to his death the boy endured savage abuse.
Court papers said the boy was starved, beaten, and made to wear nappies.
He was forced to eat his own faeces and stand on a coffee tin for hours.
During this time he had to undergo boot-camp style punishment .
The mother originally said he had fallen off his pogo stick and hit his head.
Video footage taken by his mother and her partner, Kodi Maybir, would chart the sickening reign of terror that would turn him into a cowering, fearful child weighing just 20kg and his body a mass of bruises, infected wounds and both fresh and healing bone fractures.
Justice Harrison accepted opinions by forensic psychiatrists who likened their relationship to Stockholm Syndrome or a cult, as the mother surrendered all decisions about her children's care and treatment to him. She even took part in a sickening regime of corporal punishment, abuse and neglect that continued until the boy's death on May 21, 2013.
He sentenced her to a maximum 14 years jail, with a non-parole period of 10 and a half years.
Kodi Maybir was found guilty of murder and pleaded guilty to six other charges, including assault and using the boy to produce child abuse material. He will face a sentencing later this year.

John Ashfield, aged 6, Nowra, NSW, Australia, August 1993
John Ashfield, aged 6 - was beaten to death with a hammer to his head.
His mother, Gunn-Britt Ashfield, 25, led the assault; her boyfriend, Austin Allan Hughes, 20, was a keen participant.
........
A frenzy soon developed: they punched him with their fists, and beat him with the white aluminium rod that held up a curtain.
John was sobbing: "I'm really sorry, don't do this to me, I'm sore, I'm sorry."
Hughes mocked him, saying: "You scream like a little girl."
When John continued to sob, Hughes took a girl's dress out of the cupboard and shoved it over the crying boy's head, forcing his arms through the sleeves.
"He started crying and carrying on," Hughes would later say, in a statement to police.
Death came slowly: Ashfield would later tell police that Hughes had put the phone book against John's head, and repeatedly beat him with a hammer, until John was limp and dazed, unable to sit up on the bed.
......
Several hours passed before Ashfield took her son to Shoalhaven Hospital. In the meantime, she told her other children to tell police John had been beaten by a gang of teenagers while walking through a park.
They were each sentenced to 21 years in jail, reduced to 19 years on appeal, with a minimum of 14 years.
