I just wrote an entire page with details about Patty's case on here and it just disappeared!

What you won't see on the attached article is that her husband changed his name from JR Vaughan to John Paul Willson IIII and goes by JP. Also note that she was murdered in Wilson county. Coincidence? He moved out of state with her children shortly after she went missing. Blood was found in the home. Her husband was in construction. After 26 years of searching, writing her story and giving interviews, I am tired. If you are interested in her case, I will happily share everything I have. When you google her name, there is much information out there, a lot of it correct, a lot of it not. I have been searching for her since the day after Christmas 1996.

The Asst Chief of Police was one of her husbands good friends. Whenever a Detective or Texas Ranger got close to the case, they were reassigned.

Please reach out if you have questions or think you can help.

If you saved the page you wrote I would love to read it and decide if I want to continue your work. Is there a way you can get it to me?

Patty was 32 yrs old. Mother of 3. She was the light of our family. She had been in a loveless, abusive marriage and October of 1996, decided to separate from her husband JR Vaughan. He had moved to an apartment from their Texas ranch leaving Patty and her children. Patty had reconnected with her first love Gary Vassbinder that late October. Patty, my sister and I were at the state Rodeo when we ran into Gary. They stood in the rain and talked for 45 minutes. It was clear their feelings were as if time stood still.
The night before Patty disappeared, we all gathered at my sister Cathy's house for our annual Christmas eve celebration. Patty brought her children, Gary and his son. We had a great time and Patty didn't leave until after midnight. She and Gary came in separate cars and went separate ways. Before Patty left, she asked me if I knew how to file a restraining order. JR was following her and showing up at the house. He had tapped her phone (she didn't know that at the time). Because it was Christmas, it was not the right time or place to discuss it so we made plans to meet for lunch the following Tuesday as it was my day off. We never got the chance.

JR was expected to come to the ranch the next morning to do Christmas with the kids. According to JR's statement, they fought throughout the day. He said it was the worst fight they ever had and that he was madder than he had ever been. He said that Patty stormed out of the house, got in her van and drove away.

Patty would have never left without her children. She had never left them alone with him. He never wanted to be alone with them. He called his sister Marilyn to come get the kids. He said he had to get the locks changed. (On Christmas day in a very small Texas town)... yeah, no. When his nephew arrived with his sister, JR said Patty was resting and not to be disturbed.. (I thought she drove off)??

Patty's van was found the next day 5 miles from her job and 20 miles from her home. There were no fingerprints in the van. On the outside of the van, 1 fingerprint was found over the wheel well. It was JR's nephews. The tire had been initially deflated and the interior had been washed and still wet. Pattys blood was found in the van. And in the house, in the bedroom, in the bathroom, master closet, on a mop and in a bucket.

The sheriff and JR grew up together, went to church together and were both Mason's. No charges were ever filed, and JR gave 1 statement, hired and criminal defense attorney and then moved away. Never allowing us to see the children again. He moved about 5 miles from Mexico for 3 yrs, then moved to Colorado where he briefly remarried, then Idaho and now back to Texas. We have reached out to their now grown children but no response. JR changed his name. He said it was because of all the pressure I and my family have put on him over the years in not letting this go. Patty's case has been featured on many shows and in the news. I make sure of it.

Patty was so loved and adored. I don't think she ever had an enemy in her life except the monster she married.

Thank you for sharing Patty's story. I'm so sorry for your loss. It's so difficult to go many years without answers.

(You have a short time to edit & remove the content in the two extra postings. Just state DBM for deleted by me.)

Was any evidence preserved that you know of? Maybe photos of blood, etc.?

Do you have any LE reports or other public documents you can share related to this crime?

TIA

You're going to love this part... When LE did the luminol testing, they said they "forgot" to put film in the camera. What I do have is the retired detective who worked tirelessly on this case. (Oddly enough, he was a rookie and one of the first officers on the scene and was part of the CSI team)... When he had enough evidence to take it to the DA, he was suddenly reassigned.

I do have a copy of the original warrant for the blood taken from the children for DNA testing. it states "enough blood evidence to believe a murder was committed" but it was faxed to me in 1997 and is pretty hard to read now. I did retype it at some point. I have years and years of news reports. I did a great deal of research and found a codicil to a will and property purchases etc. The Will is important because the property that JR and Patty lived on was actually JR's mothers home. She lived in a guest house on the property and had left the house and land to JR AND Patty. She was blind and dying from brain cancer. JR wanted Patty out of the house. Patty had legal standing to stay.

How old were Patty's children when she died?

Have you ever asked the Texas Attorney General to look into the case?

Did her husband remarry?

Thank you for sharing your information. I will thoroughly read it as soon as possible.

Patty's oldest was Daughter Brittany. She was 9 in 1996. Raymond was 6 and Tyler was 3.
I sent a letter in 1998 to the Attorney General but never got an answer.
JR briefly remarried when he lived in Colorado. I spoke to his ex-wife the year after they divorced but she did not want to get involved and had no information.

I am really sorry for this incredibly sad event. The way the church treated her was awful as well.

The fact that her car was cleaned so extensively makes me think that it was used irrespective of anything else as why clean it like that?

I don't think she is on the property due to that and also due to the questioning of the searchers - when, where, how long...

I wonder where JR went locally. I wonder where the nephew went locally. Just some thoughts.

I'm not sure personally about the school because of the potential involvement of other people and risk. Again, just my thoughts and could be completely wrong. It would be more complicated.

I wonder if any of the searches included the wooded area south of La Vernia airsoft.

I am really sorry for your loss and I very much hope that you locate Patty and bring her home. Obviously something terrible happened at that house. I wish that I could help more. To be looking all of this time is a testament to the family's love for her.

I found out about this from a Reddit thread. The obvious corruption makes me sick. I’m so sorry for Patty’s family (is OP her sister?). How did the church treat her? I missed that part unless it’s written about somewhere else.

I hope you find her and get justice for her someday.

DETAILS:

Patty Vaughan lived in La Vernia, Wilson County, Texas, with her husband and three children. Vaughan and her husband were in the middle of a trial separation and her husband moved out of their residence. On 12/25/1996, Vaughan met with her husband at their house in order for her husband to celebrate Christmas with their children. Vaughan's intention was to drop their children off at her relatives' house in San Antonio and see her new boyfriend later that evening. Vaughan and her husband reportedly got into an argument earlier in the day on 12/25/1996. Vaughan's husband indicated Vaughan became upset later in the evening and left the house in her minivan. Vaughan's family filed a missing persons report on 12/26/1996 with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office and her minivan was located off of Loop 1604 the same day. Vaughan's body was never located.

The subject of the next podcast hasn’t been finalized yet, but Virgin hopes an upcoming series can focus on Patty Vaughan, who went missing on Christmas 1996, Virgin’s first year as a reporter. It’s a deeply personal case for Virgin.

“I have stayed with her family the entire 26 years [since], including eight years that I was up in Milwaukee working as a reporter,” she said. “It just breaks my heart because I promised them I would be there until the day that we found Patty.”
