Paul Reubens, best known for playing Pee-wee Herman, has died at age 70.

Reubens' rep confirmed his death in a statement to PEOPLE on Monday, revealing that the actor had cancer for years before he died.

"Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness," read the statement.

"Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit," it continued. "A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit

While he was far from a perfect human being, I challenge anyone to claim they are. He was a huge part of my childhood and ranks up there with Ernest P. Worrell. R.I.P PeeWee

As a Gen Xer, this makes me sad. He was Saturday morning cartoons with me and my little brothers all being together belly laughing at Pee-wee's Playhouse.

So sad - and condolences to all you Gen-Xers who loved him so (and I loved him too, my children are very sad today).

He was a naturally gifted and amazingly funny human being, who helped my family through many a tough time.

Same. We invoke his name often in our home as my husband, years ago, purchased some kitchen utensils that are oversized to me. He loves them, lol. I feel like I'm handling big, cartoonish props when I use them, and we call them the Pee-wee Herman spatula, spoons, etc.

RIP.
