On April 12th, 1971, University of Arkansas coed left got off work at the campus ROTC office, where she was a secretary as part of her work study program, around 730pm. Pauline asked Terri Keating if she wanted to go with her to a black gospel concert but Keating had a class so Pauline went alone. The concert last an hour at most and began at 8pm. From there Pauline went to the campus library where she went most nights to study. Pauline was an anthropology major. However, on this night her roommate Alice Pat Murphy would tell investigators that Pauline typically would leave the library around 10pm but on this warm April night Pauline would leave early enough for her to be stabbed 7 to 8 times in an arm, chest & stomach at the northwest corner of the South Duncan Ave and Treadwell Street intersection across from Summit Terrace Apartments.

Police would arrest a 17yr old named Peter Kunkle (now deceased) but release him on passing a polygraph test.

During the course of the investigation which spanned into Memphis, Atlanta and even Virginia, it was learned that in 1965 Pauline married a Charles Pate from Los Angeles (now deceased) yet no divorce record can be found. It was also learned from another roommate of Pauline's named Iris Fletcher that Pauline was deathly afraid of her ex-husband.

Then in the 80s an anonymous letter post marked Capron, VA (location of former Southhampton Correctional Center) was sent to the publisher of a true crime graphic novel called Master Detective which published a story based on Pauline's murder in 1974. The letter was signed Your Friend and it's author was clearly afraid they would be charged with withholding evidence but went on to say Pauline's murder was a case of mistaken identity the the murder was supposed to be someone else.

In the 90s investigators were able to pull partial latent fingerprints off the letter which revealed (we don't know the has been lost along with all DNA collected and must of the Fayetteville PD case file.

The VA DOC particularly the warden at Southhampton was able to state that based on a list of named Fayetteville PD provided three individuals provided had served time at Southhampton Correctional Center and those names were Terry Smith & Richard Finley (both friends of Kunkle) and a main witness named Joe Clifton (who just so happen to have been the boyfriend to Gennifer Flowers of the Clinton Sex Scandal)

A man named Jack Butler who is an author of sexually charged stories had confessed but the details were off and he was allowed to walk. He basically said he thought he killed his wife but when he got home he was shocked to see her still alive.

"Before 2020, the Arkansas State Police did not have an active cold case unit.

As of mid-May, the agency had 117 unsolved murder cases under its purview. The oldest was Pauline Storment, a 27-year-old student at the University of Arkansas. She was stabbed to death blocks away from the campus on the night of April 12, 1971.

After a review earlier this year by the cold case unit, the case was closed, still unsolved.

Fifty of state police’s unsolved cases are featured on a website where tips can be submitted to investigators. Those cases are spread out over 32 counties in alphabetical order.''
