On the pro-Jodi site they believe that Nurmi made that motion to quit just so she would have a good cause for an appeal later on. She could then say that her own attorneys were not in her corner so she should get a retrial.

She won't be able to appeal her verdict on the basis of her attorney's wanting to quit during the penalty phase. If she continues to play her predictable hand, she'll have an automatic appeal by virtue of the DP.
