Great post. Thanks.

But how would everyone here react if after the prosecution's opening statement this trial was canceled because a plea deal was met? It's a longshot, but it is something to think about. Comments?

It would be nice to spare the victims from having to testify, but I don't see how justice could be done without a trial. Some of these victims and their families have waited years to put Jerry on the hot seat, so I can't see the Prosecutor offering a deal unless it is life imprisonment, and Amendola won't go for that.

Observers eager to see Joe Amendola's defense in Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse trial

http://www.centredaily.com/2012/06/10/3223764/joe-amendola-set-to-go-on-defense.html#wgt=rcntnews

..........McGettigan hasn’t shied away from lambasting Sandusky in public during news conferences. In April, the prosecutor said The Second Mile charity Sandusky founded was a “victim factory” through which he met young boys. He earned their trust, McGettigan argued, before sexually abusing them.

Prosecutors may be inclined to address parts of their case that may appear to be weak, Epstein said. For instance, there’s little, if any, physical evidence known, and the prosecution would tell the jury that’s the nature of cases like this.............

Amendola’s expected defense strategies will be to raise enough doubt in the jury’s mind to discredit the alleged victims’ testimony. Amendola made that abundantly clear during pleadings in the case.

“I assume here he’s going to say, ‘My client didn’t do this’ and that he’s going to be explaining that this is a case where people either made up these stories for financial reasons or psychologically got convinced of them,” Epstein said.

Amendola may present the criminal records of the alleged victims, one of whom he said has a robbery conviction. He also wanted medical records, like mental health evaluations or opinions from therapists, to see if the young men had suffered any behavioral issues before they met Sandusky.

excellent and eye-opening article on the NYT today that tells the story of abuse that happened at tony Horace Mann school, from the viewpoint of someone who attended there and knew the abusers and abused. It is loooong but well worth reading. I think most of us are concerned for the victims and how their abuse and this trial has and will affect them. This is the story of their anguish and extraordinary courage.........

By AMOS KAMIL

Excerpts:

When the Penn State scandal came out last year, I kept getting tangled in the questions everyone else was getting tangled in: How does an institutional culture arise to condone, or at least ignore, something that, individually, every member knows is wrong? Andrew’s story came back to me in a rush. The questions of Penn State, I realized, are the questions of Horace Mann and perhaps every place that has been haunted by a similar history.

Foote’s tenure as headmaster lasted only three years, and since that time he suffered a stroke, but speaking recently in his home on the Upper East Side, he was able to recall both the letter and the surrounding events. “Somary came into my office with the mother and strenuously denied everything,” Foote said. “His vehemence made a lot of people put off doing anything about it.” Later, Foote said: “All the administration and trustees got together and decided they wouldn’t do anything about it. People came out of the woodwork protecting Somary.” (I have contacted 10 trustees from that era. Most declined to speak to me at all; only one, Michael Hess, agreed to speak with me on the record, but he said he had no specific recollection of the incident.)

Stories like theirs point to why sexual abuse by teachers — or religious leaders or relatives, for that matter — is so especially damaging. As Mones said: “It’s counterintuitive, but sexual abuse emotionally binds the child closer to the person who has harmed him, setting him up for a life plagued by suspicion and confusion, because he will never be sure who he can really trust. And in my experience, this is by far the worst consequence of sexual abuse.” That’s one reason, he said, why those few victims who ever speak out at all tend to do so only after the abuser is dead or dying: telling the truth while the other person is still strong enough to deny it, or to blame the accuser, is just too terrifying.

Does anyone if we have to wait until the end of each day to receive reports about what is happening-I know the judge said no tweets from CR or are the reporters going to do recaps during breaks?

From WGAL:

News 8 has crews in Bellefonte. During the proceedings, court rules do not allow anyone inside the courtroom to send updates. However, during breaks in the trial, reporters can send e-mails, make phone calls, tweet etc... As our crews send updates, we will post them here. Be sure to check back for the latest reports.

The lead prosecutor in Jerry Sandusky's child sexual abuse trial showed pictures of the alleged victims to jurors during opening statements of the former Penn State assistant football coach's trial.

Sandusky sat quietly at the defense table and looked to his right at a video screen at times while Senior Deputy Attorney General Joseph McGettigan III outlined the allegations, which led to the ouster of longtime football coach Joe Paterno. The pictures showed many of the alleged victims smiling.

Some of the allegations read aloud by McGettigan were graphic. At one point, the prosecutor said Sandusky put his hand down one boy's shirt and down his pants.

The 68-year-old Sandusky has maintained his innocence.

Sandusky hunched slightly his seat at the defense table as Judge John Cleland outlined the charges to the jurors.

I read somewhere total of 500 years.....

J. J. said 350 years....

Doesn't make much difference if he is found guilty...just hope it's enough to make a life sentence....IMO

Jeankasaurus on IS just said that photos of the victims were shown to the jury. She said they were all such cute little boys, most blond but a few brunettes. I have no link so moo.

May JS be put away for a very long time so that he can never hurt another child again, my wish.
