The Village at Penn State was the brainchild of former Penn State president Graham Spanier. But it never took off. Maybe that's because the folks behind the development were gouging the elderly with entrance fees of around $500,000. Even having Paterno appear in a 2005 ad failed to help. (If anyone out there still has the ad, please send it in.)

I love how Paterno has Penn State under his name then Partner in that video. I am not surprised at all that Penn State allowed him to do that.

It wasn't. The Village's nonprofit owner filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday. The filing indicated that Pinnacle was never repaid its initial investment, and that $18.8 million was owed to residents who moved out and demanded refunds on their entrance fees.

These people sure stretch the meaning of nonprofit. I wonder how much money these old people will get back?

This writer suggests that Paterno didn’t report Sandusky to the campus police because it would hurt The Village retirement center and Poole and this is silly.

As in all huge real estate venture capital startups, there were numerous investors in the $125 million start up of The Village and not just Poole and Paterno. The wealthy elderly who could afford a $500,000 downpayment to live in The Village were equally as likely to be involved with Poole in venture capital startups.

Huge real estate startups have numerous wealthy investors because they are the people who can afford to be in venture capital. Not-for-profit corporations ask these same wealthiest individuals to serve on their boards of control because they give money. Therefore, the board members of Second Mile are going to be within several degrees of separation from each other and all the other wealthy people in that area through their venture capital investments.

Let me be sure I understand this correctly.

In 2002........

The same year this Sandusky freak was caught in a Penn State team shower raping a child........

Joe Paterno......

Head coach of the Penn State football team........

was a business partner with Robert Poole, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Sandusky’s playpen........

AND William Schreyer.........a Penn State Trustee.........whose daughter was also on the board of TSM..........

in ventures including The Village at Penn State (whose concept was the brainchild of Graham Spanier, President of Penn State University), a golf resort, a restaurant, an inn, a bottled water company, a coaching website, and a chain of convenience stores?

Have I got the gist of this correct?

THERE’S NO WONDER LAW ENFORCEMENT WASN’T CALLED! ALL OF THESE BIZ BUDDIES KNEW ABOUT SANDUSKY!

Not a single one of them had the basic human dignity to call the authorities and put a stop to it for the sake of those children. Their inbred, convoluted business arrangement had them bound to each other in such a way that a scandal of this nature would have cost them dearly.

If there's any justice left in this world, hopefully it still will.

It was a house of cards and the corner stone cards where Sandusky's boys he raped.

Here is a handwriting analysis on Jerry Sandusky.

Jerry Sandusky: Is he defendable?
http://digitaljournal.com/blog/13916

Sandusky's signature is not strongly revealing character traits consistent with the heinous allegations. What stands out is uncontrollable enthusiasm. This can interpreted as an inability to stop where others would. That is a great trait for a coach who needs to push his players and not so great for the described allegations.

It is his enthusiasm that makes him what he is. He used his enthusiasm to lure his victims.

All eight of the boys allegedly sexually abused by former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky will testify against him when preliminary hearings in the case begin next week, according to people close to the case.

News that all eight victims will testify against Sandusky is a blow to his defense. Sandusky's lawyer Joe Amendola had previously told ABC News that at least one of the boy's had denied that he was abused.

"The environment was family like," Sandusky explains; "All the times were precious times, they were significant times."

Attorney Michael Boni, who is representing the now teenage boy known as Victim Number 1 -- who was the first to come forward to accuse Sandusky -- says that their times with the former coach were horrifying for the victims of his alleged crimes.

"These were quote 'precious' moments for him, in fact they were the most vile, horrendous unspeakable moments for his victims," Boni said.

I'll have to admit, this dude's words are a touch more refined, but inbred and convoluted are the same in any manner of portrayal.

"It's no coincidence that they failed to act at the same time that they were working on this project," said victims' attorney Jeff Anderson, who filed a civil lawsuit against Sandusky, The Second Mile and Penn State on Wednesday.

Anderson called the $125 million project "another layer of motivation, individual financial stakes, in making sure that the stature of The Second Mile and Penn State remained intact."

I guess they would tug on people's heartstrings, then get them to sign on the bottom line.

Sounds more like a land speculation and construction firm than a nonprofit.

More on Paterno's ties to Second Mile:

Officials at the charity would not specify who was notified. But some have questioned whether certain people within the charity knew before 2008, given Paterno's close business and personal relationships -- including dinners and a Bahamas vacation -- with Poole and several other past and present board members.

"I honestly think there was a conversation. I can't believe there wasn't one," fumed one former board member. "To be honest, I think people were worried about what would happen to Penn State and The Second Mile if Jerry Sandusky was found out."

http://www.villageatpennstate.com/university-connection

Ok this explains why Penn State was allowing Paterno to use their name in his advertising. They had a stake in it. I bet the students were getting credits.

IT'S YOUR UNIVERSITY, TOO.

As a resident of The Village you enjoy a very special relationship with Penn State University. You can volunteer, attend University events, maybe even teach a class yourself. Plus, university students regularly visit The Village campus, bringing their youthful energy to everything from yoga classes to serving up ice cream.

Because you live at The Village you can:

Attend classes free on a space-s available basis.
Enjoy priority access to Penn State football and basketball tickets.
Receive advance opportunity to attend events in the Bryce Jordan Center and the Center for Performing Arts.
Take part in University cultural and educational seminars.
Take lessons in golf, swimming, tennis and more from college athletes.
Contribute to campus life as a mentor, project assistant, or many other ways.
Use University tennis courts and Natatorium.
Golf on the Penn State courses at reduced rates.
Scoop up Penn State Creamery ice cream at the on site Village Creamery.
Simply enjoy the stimulating University atmosphere.

Then it appears Penn State was leasing land to the retirement village.

The Village at Penn State: The University-Based Retirement Community (UBRC) ™
Five Requirements to meet The UBRC Classifications as per Andrew Carle, Executive-in- Residence, Assistant Professor Director, Senior Housing Administration at George Mason University:
1. Proximity-Within one mile of host school
2. Two-directional programming- guarantees interaction between residents and students
3. Continuing Care- offering independent living, assisted or personal care, and skilled nursing care
4. A financial commitment on part of the University by leasing land to the CCRC
5. At least 10% of residents should be retired faculty, alums or alumni parents with personal connections to the school

FROM INSPIRATION TO REALITY, IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU.

Former Penn State University President Graham Spanier envisioned a not-for-profit retirement community that tapped right into the energy and enlightenment of the university: One that encouraged multi-generational involvement through cultural, educational, and physical activities.

Of course The Village offers beautiful private residences with housekeeping services. Of course the restaurant-style dining room prepares exceptional meals. Of course you can expect amenities from an indoor pool to an ice cream parlor. Of course there's a broad range of activities to enjoy along with access to university programs and opportunities. Neither Dr. Spanier nor you would accept anything less.

The Village also assures you of peace of mind through a continuum of wellness programs as well as the availability of personal care and nursing care on site through our Life Care program.

But, it's the university connection that makes all the difference. And makes The Village the best place to enjoy every aspect of retirement living to its fullest.

WE ARE... The Village at Penn State. And you can be, too.

There are those funny words again. Not for Profit.

I believe in the civil suit filed last week the complainant, who was not one of the victims involved in the GJ investigation, also claims Sandusky began to sexually abuse him in '94. I just needed someone else to verify it as the earilest date that we are aware of. Thanks.

BigCat, I happen to see this article today that says the new complainant states his abuse began in 1992:

"The lawsuit claims Sandusky abused the boy from 1992, when the boy was 10, until 1996 in encounters at the coach's State College home, in a Penn State locker room and on trips, including to a bowl game. The account echoes a grand jury's description of trips, gifts and attention lavished on other boys."

This project was not funded by venture capital from wealthy investors. According to the article, Pinnacle Development, which included Paterno, Poole, William Schreyer and Philip Sieg was 50% of the development team. The group had just secured financing and was filing for building permits and beginning to market units when McQueary approached Paterno.

This project was in the start up phase with secured financing. Financing that had likely been endorsed by not only Pinnacle as a group, but also by each partner individually. According to the article, each partner had also invested $125,000.00 into the project as well.

Look what has happened to the Second Mile and Penn State since Sandusky's acts have been exposed. Principals of this financing have lost their jobs and income. Lawsuits are being filed almost daily. Government grants have been pulled and other construction projects that some of these same principals were involved in have been abandoned. Board members are quitting. Donors are bailing. Investigations are underway on both of the organizations to which every member of Pinnacle, except Phillip Seig, belonged.

There is no way that Paterno, Poole, or Schreyer could afford to risk the same catastrophic reaction to exposure in 2002. It is almost a given that, with such negative change in these people's financial positions like those being experienced in today's environment, the recently obtained financing would have been pulled. Not only would the project stop dead in it's tracks, but each partner would have lost their $125,000.00 investment.

IMO, each one of these people knew about Sandusky. They were also savvy enough to realize the consequences of exposure of his monstrous acts.

I remember a statement from one of the early articles about this mess:

This Sandusky scandal looks more incestuous and more political by the day.

A lot of people had a lot of incentive to do nothing whatsoever.

http://deadspin.com/5860893/second-...-company-run-by-chairman-of-sanduskys-charity

I think some of that incentive is coming to light.

As for why these people couldn't risk this scandal and exposure in 2002, did any one notice this?

What'd it take for bankruptcy, thirty days after exposure?
